This problem is frustrating me! I'm using Nero 7 Ultra and using the "Make your own DVD-video".
1. I select "Make your own DVD-video", Nero Vision 4 opens (version 4.5.0.24).
2. In 'video options' I select PAL and 16:9 for aspect ratio.
3. I import using "add video files", an AVI file. When imported it says that it is 704 x 576(D1) - 16:9. (I know that is NTSC size however-see note below!).
4. On the next page where I design my menu, it only shows 4:3 menus and not 9:16.
I then play with Nero Showtime. The movie starts with the menu in 4:3 (the display window resizes to 4:3). I click on the start button, I created in the menu and then the window resizes to 9:16 and movie plays in 9:16 mode.
If I then interupt the move by selecting the menu (or root) on the control panel, the window resizes back to 4:3 and displays the menu again (in 4:3). Playing the move again, it all goes back to 9:16 as expected.
It is only the menu which will not display in 9:16, grrrrrrr!
If the option is only for the movie and not the menu then in my view that has got to be a 'bug'. I can see no logical reason why it should be like that.
The problem is that what Nero calls "16:9" is not really 16:9. Officially this is called "4:3 letterboxed". That means that the picture is 4:3 with black above and beneath the movie. What your 16:9 TV does is "pan and scan" the black areas away by zooming in on the movie (which by-the-way means you lose quality).
Nero creates a 720x576 DVD (PAL), but 16:9 should be 1024x576 pixels (PAL). I hope Nero will make real 16:9 possible in the next version.
Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense to me. I always wondered how in PAL, 720 x 576 could sometimes be 4:3 and at other times 9:16. Fact is, it never is, as the 1024 x 576 dimensions for 9:16 makes much more sense.
