I just got a Pioneer 105 and am totally unsure if I should upgrade my firmware. I have read that v1.20 is the best, but have also read just leave v1.0 on. Recently I have been hearing that the v1.30 is the way to go. I was just hoping I could get some input from others who after upgraded and how their experience has been. I want to be sure because there is no going back. Thanks.

Did you buy a new Pioneer DVR105, because they come with v 1.30 and is probably the best.

If you only have the one DVD Drive then your Pioneer 105 wont have magnificent ripping speeds , there is a flash f/w that will make it open up to rip a lot faster..
Just thought I'd add that
P.S. ( d/l is here http://forum.rpc1.com/viewtopic.php?t=12883 )

Very interesting post Herbsman. however, it was dated back in 2002, will Pioneer not have updated their most recent drives with a faster reading/ripping speed?
The other thing it tends to suggest is that the ripping speed is subject to all DVD-ROMs and not just DVD Writers. From what i read, pressed discs are read fine, but the way in which DVD-R discs are created, causes a problem with the reading of the disc. Therefore, i would presume that this problem is not just in relation to Writers, but to the ROMs as well. Would this not then mean that there would be no difference, whether your ripped with DVD-ROM or DVD-Writer?
Interesting thought. Could someone clear it up for me.......

I used to get X2.5 with my Pioneer 104
I bought a Lite-On 165H (which had latest f/w installed) DVD-Rom for £35 so as I could rip faster & on-the-fly copy say the need should arise..it rips at roughly X8

Yes my Samsung rips a-lot faster than my Pioneer 104. I think the Pioneer (and other makes?) were just not designed to rip movies or CD's for that matter reflected in the fact that the 104 only burns CD-R at maximum 8x. However I think Pioneer have now realised that people want the best of both worlds.

Indeed : )-
I'm seriously considering the new Pioneer 107 when it comes out in December (or soon after)
As long as I read good things about the dual format 106 in the meantime..

Go to this site: http://pioneerdvd.rpc1.org/
Then scroll down about 2/3 of the page to "PIONEER DVD-R Drives - IDE/ATAPI" and see the file "Pioneer DVR-105 v1.30 RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip". I've installed this firmware successfully and it has allowed me to burn at 2X with any 1X media. It works perfectly. I highly recommend it.

Good post, it does work. My DVR-105 now pulls files off a DVD-ROM at 7x. Herbsman, I can see why they made u a mod.
