pc conncection without charging battery

is this possible, to connect the ipod and update songs without charging the battery as most of the time when i am updating my songs i wont be at the pc for very long and the battery seems to be detireating already.

The batteries in iPod's arn't effected by how you charge them. As long as the first time you used it you conditioned it properly [completely drain the battery then charge it] Its battery life should be fine, albeit slowly deteriorating. I don't think there is any way to turn off the power you your USB port. So the only solution if you still wish to pursue it, would be to open up the wiring in your cable and cut the 2 power wires, which ones they are I have no idea, and I'm not entirly certain the cord would still work after doing so.
