Hi, I'm trying to backup my DVD copy of The Hours, but two files are failing, I think because the disk is a bit scratched.

The failure messages are Cyclic Redundancy Check errors, but I don't think it's due to any kind of protection.

I've run DVD Decrypter, and SmartRipper both with AnyDVD, and they both get stuck in the same place. The odd thing is the relevant parts of the DVD seem to play fine with PowerDVD.

Any suggestions? (other than buy a new unscratched DVD!)

Thanks
NK

Try RipIt4Me or DVDFab Decrypter.

Use DVDFab Decrypter. Works all the time!

Sometimes the disc is dirty even if you don't see it. I clean mine with rubbbing alcohol before ripping. Also, some drives are better than others when it comes to reading scratched discs. For example, once I could not rip a damaged DVD with my NEC, but my BenQ had no problems.

If I always hear voices surrounding me, does it mean Im crazy or that I hear in Dolby 5.1?

Damaged DVD files can be fixed. Sometimes, a scratched disc can be buffered, but that can be expensive and sometimes the disc cannot be repaired. If I were you, I'd go and buy a new copy and then keep that as the backup. This is what I do if I cannot copy certain store-bought DVDs, but it doesn't happen often. I haven't heard of "The Hours", but I'm 100% sure that AnyDVD can rip it!

Thanks everyone for your advice.

In the end DVDFab suceeded where the other mainstream rippers failed - it includes an option to ignore read errors which worked the trick (...though haven't actually viewed the copy yet, but it seems fine).

Mental note: avoid scrathing my DVDs! :)

Cheers,

NK
