@natmaniac
Ok, so the date on your PSP is 17th August 2006?
If you flashed 01.bmp, to have that as your background you need to change the month of your PSP in Settings/Date and Time Settings/Date And Time, so that the date on your PSP is
17th January 2006.
To switch between backgrounds that you flashed, change the month of your PSP to the corresponding number. And yes, I believe you can reflash another image over a flashed one safely.

EDIT - what do you get? Is it a white background or the regular PSP coloured ones?
Well it doesn't matter really, it's easy to change the date.
I suppose if you just wanted the one background you could flash 01.bmp through 12.bmp with the same image.
If you flash 08.bmp, it will work in August, but when we get to September,the 9th month of the year, it will go to the default 09.bmp of the PSP, unless you either flash over 09.bmp as well, or just change the month of your PSP back from September to August.

Easy enough mistake to make dude. Follow the steps in the psp-hacks link that Ib posted and you should be fine.
Good luck!
