Hi, I have some AVI's that I would like to store on my PC but are currently taking up 45Gigs. I am looking for the best free software for compressing the AVI files that will allow them to be uncompressed at a later date with little or no loss in quality.
New to this so not sure if that makes complete sense.........ie don't know if AVI's can be uncompressed once compressed.
I have downloaded WinRAR, but unfortunately I haven't a clue how to use it. Can you help or direct me to a guide on how to compress a file using it? Thanks.
WinRAR is pretty easy to use. if you want to compress a file jus right click on it then click add to archieve and then save where u want then press OK then it will compress it.
OK, here is what I want to be able to do.............
(1)I want to import video from my video camera using Studio 9 in AVI format. I can do this.
(2)Edit the AVI using Studio and make a DVD to show family etc. I can do this.
(3)Save Hard Drive space.
(4) Have the option to edit the Project/AVI using Studio 9 in the future.
(3) and (4) are what I am having problem with.........
If I delete AVI's from Hard Drive I cannot edit Project unless I take the Video_TS from DVD I made and convert to AVI. BUT doing this means the menus and transitions etc are gone, I think.
If I compress the original AVI, I can store it, but I am not sure how things will fare out when I come to use that copmpressed file with studio to edit project. How much will it be affected by quality, will transitions and menus still work the same or even be there.
So, if I was able to compress AVI and then in months to come was able to uncompress it that would be great.
why dont you just make a copy of the movie file on your HD then compress the copy then uncompress it and see if it is still good and stuff. So that you are 110% sure it will work.
jozza, i have found compressing file to be satisfactory as far as quality of AVI goes. I have also found I can still use the compressed file no problem with Studio 9. Thanks for your help.
I would still like to find out if I can uncompress an AVI file back to normal just for the hell of it..........
