Hello, I wonder if someone can help. I'm staying in accomodation that has free internet set up for the room. A wire comes from the wall in to a silver modem looking thing, and then into my computer. Similar to access in a hotel i would say. I'm tying to use Bitcomet, but only around 10kbs. I dont know whether im using a router or not. Is the silver thing a router? If it is, then ill try set up port forwarding.

Actually, i just bypassed the box in my room and just ran the lan wire straight into my notebook. I still get an internet connection, but it's no faster. So my real problem is I have no idea if the source of the wire is coming from a router or not? The place im staying has many internet ready apartments. I presume they are using a router somewhere. Do you have any suggestions regarding my next step?

Try using Utorrent instead,
And select encryption Protocol Headers,
Either (A) your max at your connection,
(Utorrent has a built in speedtest GUI to check this and use the correct setting based on your current bandwidth).
OR (B)they are detecting the torrent activity,(Throttling)
And you can turn the encyption on and that would
fix the problem.

Thanks, but where is the option to turn on the encryption protocol headers? Actually in the utorrent program itself under preferences?

Well, that seems to have done the trick. I'm now getting around 75kbs so quite a drastic improvement. Still, when i run the check on the port, it still says It needs to be opened and points me at a website with a list of currently available ones. I dont see how I can do this if the router belongs to a third party, but i can live with the current download speeds.

Thanks.

Try switching to a high portnumber (50000 and up) or use port 1720..
