I have a 8x burner. I use dvddecrypter to burn all my movies. When I use 8x media the burns start out at 4x and then works its way up to 8x. This is fine with me, but now I have 16x media. I use Maxell. Probably is, with the 16x I can't get my burns past 4x. My firmware is updated. I know that not all media is the same but Maxell has always been reliable for me. I don't expect to be able to burn at 16x but I at least should get my burns up to 8x. Any ideas? Thanx.

You said your firmware is uptodate. That would be my first thought. Try some different media; ie. Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Firmware (I believe) is programed for media types, burn speeds, and Brand among other possible issues. I suspect in that case it will only burn Maxells up to 8X. Might do better with another brand (or it might not). Give it a try.

Are you sure you have the burn speed set to 16x or MAX in DVD Decrypter?

I wouldnt suggest going faster then 8x anyway when doing video files. I only burn at 4x with my 8x TY's. I would rather take the extra time and slow the burn down a little rather then burn at MAX speed and take the chance of Disc Read Errors on the burn.

I do burn some disc at 8x speed and DVD Decrypter does the same to me. Starts at 4x and slowly works its way up to 8x.

Some older drives just don't have any f/w available that is compatable with 16x rated media. If your drive is a rebadge, you might be able to crossflash it with oem firmware ie memorex and lite-on. Give us your drive make and model. Either way it is recommended that you burn 16x media at 8x, 12x max. As a last resort you might want to look into buying a brand name 16x rated drive. Good 16x drives can be had for about $35 nowadays. A couple popular models are the benq DW1650, benq, DW1655, and lite-on SHM-165H6S, and lite-on SHM-165P6S.

Sorry to get back so late. Thanx for your help. Ok. My thing is that I can get 8x media to burn at 8x, but I can't get 16x media to burn past 4x. I would think that with a 8x burner that I should be able to burn up to 8x as long as the media is 8x or more. I don't care to burn at 16x, I would just like to know why 16x media won't burn as fast as 8x media. Teac DVD+RW dv-w58e. Thanx

Yep it seems like it ought to work like that but it doesn't.
First, the speed shown on the DVDs package is not what it will burn at, but what it is capable of being burned at.
The burn speed is set by your burners' firmware during the power calibration and other checks. This not only sets the burn speed but also the laser power level as well as the write strategy.

Think of your current burner/firmware as a bumpy dirt road and your 8X media as a truck. Your 16X media as a Ferrari. The truck is faster down the dirt road than the Ferrari is.
Newer burners with updated firmware smooth out the road so to speak, allowing your 16X media to fly.
DVD manufacturers come out with the faster media first and then the drive makers have to play catch up, so things don't always work like they should.

Maxell, especially the "Made In Japan by Hitachi Corp." is ranked as 1st class media with the famous Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim.

Yes, I had my speed set at max, then switched it to 16x. I recall now that someone told me once that they had bought media that was rated higher than theyre burner and they couldn't get the media to burn past 4x. I just find it odd that I can't get 16x media to burn at least up to 8x. But fastfranks explanation explains it. Like I said, I don't need to burn fast, I just wanted to know why. Thank you guys/girls very much 4 ur help. May I add. I started out using Matrix media. First batch of fifty is now a pile of coasters. They played fine 4 a couple of times, then went 2 #$%!. I have used Maxell for about 300 discs now and haven't had a problem. Cross my fingers. Stick with the best media. It may cost more now, but will save u money in the long run. Should have listened to u guys/girls from the get go. Once again Thank-You!
