Brand new at this. I'm finding that this is not as easy as ripping and burning a CD. :) I even tried a Google search for FAQs, and there didn't seem to be a lot of them worth much.
I've seen DVDDecrypter and DVDFab Decrypter mentioned for ripping. (What's the difference between them?)
I'm going from DVD(-r) to DVD-R. (So I don't need to worry about VCD.)
Basically, recording on-air material from a DVR to DVD-R on a stand-alone DVD recorder, then rip to my PC, edit (remove the commercials), and reburn on the PC burner.
At first at least, I don't even need to worry about copy protection and stuff? (DeCSS type stuff?)
O.k I have done this but its sometimes a little awkward.
Firstly, If your dvd recorder lets you edit the commercials then do so because it actually easier than doing it on the P.C (all events considered).
Then you can simply rip it to your P.C using DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode, and burn it to a DVD-R (or +R) using same program in ISO write mode.
If you need to edit the recording on the P.C I have found it best to use TMPGEnc DVD author (not free).
You can use the "open DVD-video" option. This will analyise the disc and allow you to rip to your HDD. Once on your HDD you can edit the recording and even add your own menu's. This program also has its own burning engine so will do the lot from start to finish.
One point to note: A DVD VR recording (from a dvd recorder) often shows some strange results when you analize the disc contents.
ie, lets say you have recorded one movie.
When TMPGEnc reads the disc it will see Two recordings of exactly the same length and call them Title 1 and Title 2. It does'nt matter which one you pick unless you have edited the recording on the machine first.
In this case the two "Titles" will have differnet lengths of time because one is the original recording and the other is the one you cut the adverts out of using the recorder.
Hope this helps you.
