Hey all, hopefully someone here can help me out like last time since Nero has decided to start acting up. I'm trying to back up a DVD of mine and whilst the burning part itself seems to go fine the last four or five attempts have all failed at the verification stage.

I've been using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 to create the ISO file on my harddrive and then Nero Burning ROM 6.6.0.18 to burn it to disc. The DVD drive is a Sony DVD RW DW-D22A and I've made sure that the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels are both set to DMA. Also the discs themselves were Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x.

A couple weeks back I also ran into the problem that the DVD drive stopped playing or sometimes even recognising DVDs. Music CDs were fine just not any game or film DVDs. Did some searching around and took the advice of getting one of those lens cleaning thingies which cleared the problem right up - not sure if this is in any way related but figured I might as well mention it.

I saved the error message log from my last attempt at burning a DVD so I'll post it that someone that can actually decipher the thing might be able to see the problem. Any help would be very appreciated as this is really starting to annoy me now. Thanks.

does the dvd still play even though it errored during the verifying part?

also there is a firmware update for ur burner, i think there is BYS3
u r using BYS1, i think u have to go to the sony website to get the update firmware, unless it is a dell PC, if so u get it from them.

Well I grabbed the update and installed it so I'm now running BYS3. Unfortunately I'm still getting error messages when I attempt to verify after burning a disc. Tried playing it anyway like you suggested but there were moments where it would either pause for a split second or jump over a split second of the scene before carrying on playing.

No-one else got any ideas or suggestions? If not may just have to take the drastic option of full nuke and reinstall to see if that does anything since it's still happening.

Hi Costas
Have you tried a lower burn speed? Try 4x and see what happens.

To rule out Nero you can try burning w/ imgburn (free) and see if you get the same verification errors.

I never use verify written data on DVDs. What for? Its not going to fix anything on a burnt disc, and the best way to verify data is to watch it. The verify written data, and disc speed check are two things that can cause problems on an otherwise good burn.

You could also have a burner going out. My LG burner started doing strange things before i took it out and put my old DVD-RAM drive back in. It would read CRC errors on a disc that was virgin, cause failed burns, and just generally acting flakey. I got my moneys worth out of it. Next upgrade i will get a Benq.

512mb of memory is the minimum, and you seem to be working with it OK, but another stick of memory wouldnt hurt.
If you are getting pause, and skips, try burning a slower than 8x. I use 6x for most of my burns and the old standby is 4x speed. Try that before dropping the nukes. :)
You also have your target size at 4400. That is what i use for Ty media, however, you might try a target size of 4300. It probably wont help on the verify data part, but it is a tweek you can try.
Also you might try a Verbatim disc. Maybe your system doesnt like Tys, or that batch of them. There were fake Tys running around out there also.

00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
If your burner recognized those Tys, you would have more than just 00 00 000 in there.

Well taking it down to 4x and turning verification off seem to have worked for the test DVD as no pauses and skips on this one. This pleases me. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

On the Media Specific and all 0s, as I said before I've had a couple bought DVDs that will play on my television but the computer DVD drive wont recognise at all - it doesn't even recognise a disc is in the drive. I figured it was just some sort of bloody annoying copyright protection attempt but combined with it not seeming to recognise the Taiyo Yudens during burning do you think this could be another pointer that the drive might be on its last legs?

@Costas
8x is the max this drive burns -R's so could be why taking it down to 4x made a difference. Your burner may not do well at 8x on these.

For the all 0's in the media specific codes - well from what I've seen -R media usually doesn't list the media specific codes. Just from 4 of my drives using the same media as you w/ the latest firmware they still show all 00's here. Sometimes I'll see a very generic code in the logs in the Nero forum. But I have no problems & haven't had a burn failure in ages.
When using +R media - another story - all the media specific codes should be listed there.
Your drive is actually an oem LiteOn so you can booktype +R media to DVD-Rom. Try some +R's at 8x.

You are right binkey7. Its been so long since i used -Rs, im used to seeing the +Rs list some more specifics in the code. When +Rs dont have more specifics, it usually means the firmware is out of date. Must be something about how +Rs are better. The main reason i use +R is that it can be booktyped to DVD-ROM. That gives you the highest compatibility as that is what a pressed DVD shows up as. I have a link to an article that gets fairly in depth, but it states the case for +R being the superior format.
Here is a sample:
Quote:
Also a DVD+R(W) disc allows a drive to achieve better writing quality (independently of media quality), because it gives more information to a drive than a DVD-R(W). Indeed, just like with CD-R(W), the best writing settings for a given disc are found at startup during the OPC (Optimum Power Control) algorithm, which use data contained in the pre-pits blocks/ADIP words. And regarding OPC, a DVD+R(W) gives not only more information (e.g. power dependency on wavelength) but also more precise ones (e.g. startup laser power). Moreover, all these information are available for 4 different speed ranges (primary and upper speeds, normal and 4x+ mode), while -R format only provides one set of data. This is very important because optimal writing settings are very sensitive to burning speeds. Also the OPC test area of DVD+ is 32768 sectors in total, compared to 7088 sectors for DVD-R.
http://www.cdfreaks.com/print/article/113

If the thing burns at 4x with no problems, thats the speed i would stick with. No need to buy a new burner unless you really want one. As the saying goes, If its not broke, dont fix it. When my burner went out, it acted very strangely on a few attempted burns then crapped out completely, no reading, writing, or rithmatic. I think the lasers died, or the power to them. Easier these days to just go out an buy a new one rather than tear the old one apart, and troubleshoot down to the failed component. In my case i went from 2 burners down to one, but that one is a lite-on and its hanging in there.

Well, sometimes using DVD Shrink is not enough to clean out all the protection from a dvd. Thats why you are getting errors when you use Nero after. The ISO file on your harddrive is not completely cleaned. Try using other softwares instead of DVD Shrink, like dvdfab decrypter, DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, etc to completely clean out all the protections from that file.then use Nero to burn it.<a href="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.smileycent... target="_blank"><img src="http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/15/15_16_1.gif" alt="SmileyCentral.com" border="0"><img border="0" src="http://plugin.smileycentral.com/http%253A%252F%252Fimgfarm%252Eco...
