Hi nbpua
Here's some suggestions for you:
Quote:
Recorder: <TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6012>Version: 1F30
Looks like you can use a firmware update - thinking it's the 1F34.
Here's a link:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=750
Quote:
CdRomPeripheral : TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6012 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
Turn DMA back on - part of the problem here.
Here's a guide if needed:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

Using good media so let's try the above 2 & see if that does the trick. Think you have enuf coasters for now :0)

Okay I did both of the steps above, however I got another coaster. Just 2 quick comments:
1. My burner was actually not working a month before when I was at 256MB, it was when I added 512MB for a total of 768MB that the burner started working again. As shown recently however, its not working again. (My burner using up its *sick days* for its 24/7 job)
2. I was looking through Nero infotool and it said "ASPI file(s) are missing" under ASPI, wondering if this was a factor?

Okay, I've ran the 1c35 firmware update but got an error message:

"Firmware Update Utility"
Target CD-Drive not found, The Update applies to TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R6012 CD-Drives Only, If you insert a drive, please restart the computer and retry the update operation.

Okay under the aspi tab for the system aspi are any files listed? Or does it say 'not installed'? May be factor if files are missing. If any are listed which ones are?

The memory is good - anything else change pc wise when it stopped working? Change the brand of discs you are using?
Older drive w/ a max burn of 1x so it may not like some 8x & above media.
You're okay on the firmware - the update to 1F34 took.

Yes this is what it says under the ASPI tab in Nero Infotool:

WNASPI32.DLL
Version 1,0,0,0
Length 36864 bytes
Date December 7,2000

ASPI file(s) are missing

As far as the disks, I've been using Sony DVD-R disks and have successfully burned over 70 DVDs using these disks, so they have been working fine (up to this point of course).

You may be okay on InfoTool saying aspi files are missing.
Nero uses it own.

So update to the one from 2004 - the one you have is from 2000.
Just dowload the file and copy it to: programs file>ahead>nero.
You'll get a message saying something like file exists do you want to replace - click ok.

@gwen
No biggie ;) This one had quite a few for the different oem's!

Hi, don't know if this helps but I was getting the same error. I had burned several DVDs successfully and nothing had changed except my media. I was using DVD+R discs until someone told me that DVD-R was more compatible with older drives. So when I ran out of DVD+Rs I went a bought the DVD-Rs. So, I found 1 DVD+R and without updating any firmware or drivers, I tried it and it worked 100%. I was using a Sony Vaio laptop. I used Imation DVD-R but get getting the error. I had success using Memorex DVD+R. Hope this helps.

I wish I had come to this thread earlier. According to Videohelp.com's DVD Writer database, your drive is a DVD-R only drive, which is why the -Rs worked and the +Rs didn't.

However, consider relegating that drive to a DVD reader and getting a more modern burner. I think you'll find that the flexibility of being able to use a wider variety of media will offset the $35 a modern drive like Lite-On or NEC costs.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I just wanted to give this thread some closure. I bought a new DVDRW and everything worked fine, so I guess the previous drive was all burned out. Thanks for everyone's help!

Yep, happy burning. Hey, maybe your old drive can at least still read DVDs. However, you could see to it that it's really shot...
