i have heard of these network cards for notebooks but how does it work tho?
Just connect the network card in to my laptop and it automatically detects internet connections from where i am and then i'm connected? of course i'm talking about the wireless kind.

Does anyone know and can help on what i should buy to get it connected?

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to have wireless internet wherever you go, you need to to with a hi-speed wireless internet carrier (usually a cell phone carrier will provide this). The internet works off of the same network that the phones do. If you are just going to use the laptop where there are 'hotspots', the you can just get a standard 802.11 b/g wireless card, install the drivers and have it search for available wireless networks. If a non-secured netowrk is found, you will be able to connect to it and surf away.

pretty much summed it up.all laptops now have built in wireless.as for the 3g cards.they are ok (ive heard) but the max dl speed is 50kb a sec.there is only one provider that has high speed mobile signals at 300kb a sec.

All i want to do is surf the web and check my emails and go on aim and stuff like that.

The laptop is will always be in the house(i.e: room and sometimes in the basement).

and what is exactly considered as a "hotspot"?

like, I have a DSL desktop and if i buy a wireless pcicma(i think i miss spell that) card will it pick a connection up from my desktop pc?

and thanks for replying :)

and then use the program on my xp pro "wireless network setup wizard" and set it up into the USB and am I all set?
if so where do i plug the USB to the laptop?
