So I was looking at processors and I know AM2 is the new technology. AM2 uses DDR2 vs. 939 and DDR. Are there any other differences between the two? Is performance the same between like model numbers?

I noticed prices are almost identical between old and new socket type. I just need some advice about which to go with.

Depending on the application, i think there's something like a 5%-10% increase over 939. If your buying a new AMD system, then there's no reason not to go AM2, as you say the prices are virtually identical, and future AM3 processors will be backwards compatible with current AM2 motherbards, so there's a far longer upgrade path than 939.

I will just have to wait longer to go with am2 as I will need new memory. Do they have am2 boards with onboard video yet?

yeah, there's the ASUS M2NPV-VM, a ECS board, 2 Gigabyte boards, a biostar board, an epox board, a foxconn board and probably some others. AM2 ASUS boards seem to be picky about the RAM, Corsair seems to be the only brand that works without any problems.

I went with 939 because of the Memory prices. DDR is cheaper than DDR2. But if you have a bit more to spend than me and want future proof stuff then go with AM2.

Actually I don't have any money. None. I have been hoping to get money for an upgrade and it just never happens. Right now I am running an Athlon XP2000 with 1.25 GB DDR. Man is it slow ripping dvds.

Same here on that Asus M2NPV-VM, very good Mobo, using 2 gb Kingston RAM and a AMD 64 3200+, switching to a high end X2 chip soon.
Does all i need it to do, and more.
