I've got about 300+ DVD's to rip to a 500GB external firewire hard drive. What's the fastest, most efficient, way to do this and how small can I make the file to save as much space as I can?

I have a 17" screen on the laptop that I'll be viewing the DVD's on so I don't want something so small that I'll go blind. I currently have these products:

1. Nero 6 Ultra Edition
2. DVD Shrink
3. DVD Decrypter

Any help is sincerely appreciated!

DVD Decrypter will rip the movies to your harddrive fine, depending on the size of the movie/file it should be about 3.8 to 4.7 gig per movie doing the movie only with NO extras. ISO read will get the file to your HD or use this guide

You won't fit this amount of DVD's on your HDD, even if you did movie only you would not have enough space. Better to invest in a program that converts to AVI format and you should be able to fit them on then. You can try IMTOO or some other conversion program.

Ok. I'll try again.

1. What program is the fastest to rip a DVD to your hard drive.
2. What program is the best to use to rip/convert/compress.
3. What format would be the smallest in size(without it being too small for a 17" screen)?
4. Is there one program that will do all three?

1. Fastest lately is using AnyDVD in the backround. The driver takes protections off the disc B4 you even view it. 21 day trial, usually around $30 US to purchase after. Many free ways that take much longer though.
2. DVD Rebuilder-- a process I dont know much about. There are pages here to look at it. Seems to be more button clicks to work it and a longer process but best results.

3. I'd think DivX or something like that. Since you have Nero, use the output file to change it to that or MPEG. What version of Nero do you have? If you dont know, either click the flame icon on the startsmart window, or click on the Nero name and find your installed version.
4. Nero I know 6 does, 7 too but I use 6 and have the bug free version so no problems I know of yet.

I use IMTOO DVDRipper Platinum it is a pay program, and will convert to all the formats. You will end up with a small file size, I do AVI so it is about 700mb. The quality is excellent and if you want to blow it backup to Video Compliant files you will have no loss. If you have a newer standalone player that plays DivX you can also burn the files to disk and play them. http://www.imtoo.com/

I have ImTOO and it is extremely slow when ripping to an AVI file. 2.5 hours and it was 70% completed. Processor speed is a 2.8Ghz.

I'll look into Nero 6, which is the version I have to see how well that works. AnyDVD looks like something to try, as well.

I guess you can't get all three in one nice, convenient package so I'll have to sacrifice something for the other.

Thanks very much for the feedback and I'll post more when/if I have problems.

Well the Nero forums here are great, by the way do you know what version you have? I ask because the best version of 6 is 6.6.0.18
and if you ever have a problem that will be almost the first thing looked at. If you dont have that version, go ahead and write down your serial # on a piece of paper. Uninstall your Nero then run the Nero cleaning tool
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html

and then try a reinstall from the links below, both packages, but do it manually not automatically because you do not want to install the program INCD.

Pack 1 (Burning ROM)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Pack 2 (Recode and more)
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

You should be ready for anything.

How do I install manually? I downloaded the .exe but it opens up the regular install wizard.

I tried to find where they were all extracted to, but it wouldn't let me click on anything until I quit the wizard. When I quit the wizard, the temp file everything was located in, vanished.

P.S. What is INCD and what is the name of the file so I know what not to install.

@VelvtRide
You're ok installing those 2 packages w/ the windows installer/wizard.
InCD is a separate package (package 3)and isn't included in package 1 or package 2.

No problem Deadrum33 :)
Good advice on the Nero version btw. Ah if Nero could still make them like that version!

@BINKIE---I wont lie, I keep those links saved because you posted them first. Its been so long that I had to reinstall and fix everything, that I forgot about the extra packs, nice save.
I try to stay away from posting(but always read)Nero forums as much as possible as to not step on peoples toes but try to use that sane advice in other places when needed.

Post in the Nero threads!! You won't be stepping on anyones toes - aD shouldn't be about that. We're all here to help each other out.
Plus you might pick up something someone else missed - myself included. I have no probs w/ that at all or being shown the error of my ways :)

Alright,

I must be stupid because I can't seem to do this right. Every time I load the video in Nero Recode, it won't allow me to because of an error. The disk is copyrighted.

Am I missing a step?

For Recode, AnyDVD needs to be running for a protected movie to be recoded.
Free 21 day trial here:
