I've burned my backups using Verbatim DVD+R 16x(at 8x) and for some reason after I swap the discs and press X..it sounds like its skipping, then the "Not a Valid PS2 disc" message comes up. But the weird thing is that i've had NO problems whatsoever with Verbatim DVD+Rs before..but all of the sudden they don't want to work anymore. When I try my older backups like Ratchet: Deadlocked, it runs flawlessly. Could it be that I just had duds? Please help.

Could be. That's why I use Sony DVD+R's. I've never had a problem with one yet. I've had bad batches of Verbatim.

Yup, could just be dodgy disks or maybe your ps2 laser or disks need cleaning, try burning with alcohol 120%

The other possibility is that they've changed the dye type on the discs, many companies do this. Use DVDecrypter to compare dye types on the discs that work against the ones that don't.

to ace1uk: Well the ones that have been working were Verbatim DVD+R Lightscribe disks(they work really well, flawless burns) and the ones I've used lately are just regular Verbatim DVD+R 16x..so it possibly could be the dye type.

to PS2Menace: Yeah Sonys are pretty good..hard to come by around here though.

To PS2Gen: Does Alchohol 120% Work better than DVD Decrypter? I've honestly never used it before.

EDIT: Maybe I need to burn it at a different speed? I've been burning the 16x discs at 8x.

The dye should be ok.. so my guess would be that you're burning too fast/too slow... plus try booktyping them if your burner supports it.
If none of those things work, switch back to 8x DVDs and maybe switch to DVD-R if they'll work in your ps2?

Another thing is, are you backing up from originals or from downloads?

Sorry I didn't get to this, I was busy.

Most are just originals..some are d/ls.

And I tried to burn the image on Alcohol 120% at 8x because I read in on e of the threads here that it's best to burn it at half the maximum speed. But when I started the burn it said something roughly like "Illegal Speed, Burning at 6.4x" then my computer froze..I think I might re-install the progam and if that doesn't work..I'll just get some 8x discs.

Use DVD Decrypter or Nero(burn image to disc) to burn the ISOs at 4x or 6x.. then if it still doesn't work get some 8x discs and use the 16x ones for data or films.

Oh, and what game(s) are they that you're trying to backup? could be that they need rebuilding or something.. I assume you're using swap magic 3.6?

hello, i wound up here because of the dreadful 'not a ps2 disc error'.

mine was RESOLVED by burning the same exact disc that had the error (SONY DVD+R 1-8X) at a higher speed of 8X. It worked!!

And all this time I thought the discs had to be burned at slow speeds.

Hope that helps someone.

Nope, it's only older guides that say to burn at slow speeds.. most people now wil tell you to brun at half the disc's max speed.. if not higher sometimes.. I regularly burn my backups at 4x, 6x or 8x on an 8x disc, but it also depends on your media, hardware and knowledge level too.

Well I think I figured it out. I burned Sly 3 at 12x with DVD Decrypter and it ran fine...the loading is a bit slow..but other than that it's fine. Maybe I can give 10x a try if they let me. So I guess I just have to burn it at a slightly lower speed. But I need to know..does Madden 2007 need re-building?

Alright. I decided to see how burning it at 10x would work, and it worked great! Loading is isn't nearly as slow, runs fine. So I guess the ideal burning speed for Verbatim 16x DVD+R is 10x. Goes to show ya how good trail and error is. ^_^

And does Madden 07 need re-building? I'd like to know before I give it a burn.

Glad you got it worked out - yes it is all trial and error when you swap to different media or just start backing up games.. and it's a bit easier to work out the cause next time you swap media once you know the limitations of your ps2 and burner as to what will work ok :)

Yep. Although I must admit..8x discs are much eaisier to work with. Thing is they're a bit harder to find than the 16x discs. What's a good site that sells the Verbatim 8x(or Taiyo Yuden) ?

Depends if you're from the UK, USA or where..

If in the UK.. go to www.SVP.co.uk - taiyo yudens around £30 for 100 discs, verbs are harder to come by now(with good dye anyway).. but I get the ritekg05 dye discs from ridisc.. never had a bad one yet and much cheaper at around £8 for 50.
