Okay, I have a machine that had a 32-bit Processor & Motherboard. After a lot of troubleshooting I realized the Motherboard had gone out. I had to replace the Processor and Motherboard with 64-bit. I did a Windows update with my original version of XP. Now my original version does not even have SP1 on it. I did not have a shadow backup of SP1 & SP2 but at the time I was not concerned. Now here is the problem I am facing:

1)If I go to make a new connection I do not receive the option to create using my user name and password.

2)I installed my old PPPoE connection which I believe is Enet (32-bit) but I am told that a cable is disconnected!

In order to get this PPPoE connection to work will I need to download a 64-bit connection to install? My system is connected to a Speed Stream 5360 external modem. I have changed the speed of the Ethernet adapter and I still cannot seem to get this thing to work. Any advice you have will be greatly appreciated!

The_Fiend,
I already installed all drivers except a couple that could not install without SP2. I get connection to the modem without a problem. I need that PPPoE connection in order to communicate with the ISP.

Should I try to install 64-bit PPPoE even though I am running 32-bit O/S?

Nah, that wouldn't work.
Some more info on the chip/Mobo would help, maybe there's something you overlooked, drivers/firmware wise

The Motherboard is a 64 bit Asus (I wish I was home so I could give more of a description!) that supports pc2700 DDR. The processor is a 64 AMD Athlon 3000+!

Had to go the cheap route temporarily!

Should I try another card to see if I can get connected? I am currently using the card that came with the motherboard.

Did the mobo come with onboard soundcard and graphics card *Nvidia*?
If it did, check Nvidia's website for drivers/firmware.
I had some problems with my ethernet controllers with my Asus M2NPV-VM, solved it by installing Nvidia's drivers as well.

I'll try that and let you know how it works out for me.

Thanks!

If you can communicate with your modem as you indicate... I may be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure your problem is simply that your computer does not match what is stored in your modem. Since you changed mobo's and processor you appear to be a different computer to your ISP. Since it is PPPoE which is a "secure" connection it would not recognize you as an authorized user. You may need to reset your modem and start form scratch as though you were setting up your ISP from day one.

I think you are correct. I think that my MAC address is wrong. Have either of you guys ever removed all of your Winsock components and rebooted your machine?

See even though I have contacted my ISP supplier, they have not been able to figure anything out. I personally think that most of the people that work there read from a screen that tells them step-by-step what to do. I am not sure if resetting my Winsock will correct the error or not.

I tried to install the original software that came with my connection; however, it stops at not being able to connect the PPPoE connection. I installed the enternet 400 separately but it cannot read past the modem. Does that sound like my MAC address is not set accordingly, and will removing my Winsock and a reboot possibly correct the error?

I'm not not sure about removing winsock. Someone else will have to answer that one for you.
My experience in this has been that I had to reset the modem to factory defaults (most have some sort of reset button recessed that has to be depressed with a pen/paperclip or some other small probe). Then proceed logging into the modem and manually setting up the connection. Don't give up on tech support from your ISP, if you get one "tech" that doesn't know a modem from a mouse, call back and you'll most likely get someone else. I know this can be a pain but you will eventually get someone that actually knows what they are doing.

Thanks RebelRide! I'll call them back. I also just learned how to change the MAC address. Google is great! My modem doesn't have a reset switch. If I can get the MAC address from my IP provider then I should be able to get the thing to work.
