i'm in the market for a new laptop right now and i plan to be taking this to college, but i still want something that will have the power to last me awhile. right now, i'm looking into the Intel Core 2 Duo or getting an AMD Turion 64 X2. which one will be better for my uses? any pros and cons that i should know of or is it just too early to tell? sorry if this has been posted before.

here are a few articles to help you.
It it were me. i'd be buying the Intel version, as the performance and power consumption are both better.
If however you are looking at something that will be 64bit ready then you need to look at the AMD chips.

From the Toms hardware summary.
Quote:
However, compared to an Intel platform based on the Core Duo and the company's own GM 945 chipset, the combination of AMD CPU and ATI chipset is inferior in terms of battery time and multitasking performance. Therefore, under equal conditions, it can only be regarded as the second choice - if it is worth getting at all. The Core Duo 2, Intel's next generation of laptop processors is already at hand, and first measurements show that the Core Duo 2 is even more powerful while not consuming more power.

thanks for the help, but that's the wrong Intel chip. i'm refering to the new 64 bit processor that just came out for laptops, the Intel Core 2 Duo/Centrino Duo with Core 2 Duo processor. this and the AMD processor is both 64 bits.

I wouldn't go that way just yet....I would recomend the amd because Intel tends to fail with time(but that's just me,really bad experiences with intel)If what the benchmark says its true then I will just wait for amd to hit back like they always do.

i've actually had more of a bad time with AMD but i wouldn't mind giving it another shot. this P4 i'm using right now has serve me well, but it ages rather bad and runs hot. it would be nice to see if AMD comes back with anything against Intel, but i need a new laptop now. my choice has come down to these two processors but they're just so new, i don't know which one to go for. (btw, i'm probably gonna run vista on it eventually, probably about a year or 2 after release, i don't wanna bother with all the bugs that usually comes with MS stuff when it first comes out.)

I love AMD but the numbers are undeniable. Core 2 Duo is the better choice in both raw performance and performance/power consumption so if you are given the choice between the two, go with the Core 2 Duo.

i live in the US, but after looking around, i think i'm leaning more towards the Core 2 Duo, but this really all comes down to price and i wouldn't mind saving some money and getting the AMD.

btw, i know Dell does this, but do other companies like HP sell their computers without an OS loaded?
