swap magic is a DVD/CD kinda like gameshark.. you put in the DVD/CD and then load a backed up game from it...

Also, the soft-mod is what you require to use along with Swap Magic, so you can swap discs without the PS2 knowing. Eg: Fliptop cover, Magic Keys, Slide Card.
A hard-mod is a modchip.
