Hi, I'm pretty new to dvd burning and have tried to follow alkohols tutorial, but no matter what I do, I get the disk too small message right before it goes to burn. The meter at the bottom indicates that my AVI should fit, but after it translates (or whatever it's doing) for 2 hours or more, it says...too small.

I have a Plextor PX-740A with the latest firmware and I'm using memorex dvd +RW

Is this the wrong type of media? I'm looking to play the dvd on my tv through a normal dvd player (not computer)

Any thoughts? suggestions? help?

Thanks a lot
Chris

In Vision click on the 'more' button. Pick the DVD-Video tab.
Under 'quality setting' change to 'standard play'. Sample & audio set at automatic if not already.

ok, I'll check that tomorrow. I also read that my choice of media is poor. I should be using DVD-R or +r, not +rw. Before updating my firmware, I did try the standard and it still said the same thing, which makes no sense to me since there were 100's of megs free. But I'll let you know what happens tomorrow

Thanks for the responses

You might want to try -R/+R like Verbs or made in Japan Sony, Fuji or maxell - not to sure on how Vision handle rw's with info already written on it.
I usually just burn to an rw then when done do a full erase.

Ok,

I tried Sony DVD+R and got the same message. I guess my next attempt will be to try another version.

Let me know if you think of any other suggestions please.

Thank you

Besides changing the settings in Nero - a new version may do the trick for you.
Keep us posted on how it goes.
If it doesn't you can post the log & we can go from there.

First off, I'd like to say thank you for helping me out and all your suggestions. I finally had a successful burn using the latest version (7.2.7.0). However, now I have a slew of other problems I'm hoping you can assist me with.

I used one of the templates that comes with Vision. I did an auto search for chapters and used the monitor template. After the burn I tried it out in my dvd player and was met with a strobe light effect at the menu screen. After starting the movie, the flashing went away, but I had crackly noises in addition to the sound (which was pretty much inaudible due to the crackling). And every 3 seconds or so the image would distort slightly, then come back to normal. As this is my first burn, I'm not sure if this is considered acceptable or if there's problems I can fix.

Thanks again for your help so far and I appreciate it all

Hi nobz
Nope to me that wouldn't be acceptable.
With the new version I've only done a VCD & a dvd in Vision & so far no audio or image problems.
Check the source file 1st - play back fine? No issues there?

Then check the dvd-video settings in Vision - what do you have them at?

Hi Binkie,

Thanks for the response. I'm not exactly sure what settings you're asking about, so I'll give you everything I can think of that fits in there.

The playback of the AVI on my computer is perfect and crystal clear with no sound issues.

If you mean the default video options under the more button at the bottom of Vision, then here's what I have:

General
video mode: NTSC
Nero SmartEncoding: Automatic

DVD-Video
Aspect Ration: automatic
Transcoding
quality setting: automatic (fit to disk)
Sample format: Automatic
Encoding Mode: Fast Encoding (1-pass)
Formats
Audio format: Automatic

Under the recording settings I have it set to
x4 for speed
and the check box for write is checked
determine maximum speed and burn-at-once are not checked.

If those are not the settings you mean, then let me know and I'll give you the info you need.

Thanks again

Hi nobz
Those are the right settings (sorry should have been a little clearer).
The settings you're using let Vision encode the file supposedly the correct way. Looking like Nero didn't do such a good job with this one.

So here are some options. You can try another program - these 2 have trials - ConvertXtoDVD or WinAVI - 1st one leaves a watermark in the trial - not sure about WinAVI. You could then use Nero burning rom or Express to burn if the burn option is not available in the trial.

Next option would be another version of Nero - try 7.0.8.2. Uninstall (write down your serial # 1st) then run the clean tool and install the earlier version. Here's links. For the early version use your serial #.
