SLOW Downloading speeds

Hi all,
I've got a compaq with winxp and a 512 connection, and i'm getting downloading speeds of about 10kb/s on an individual download using utorrent. I have the cable connected to the modem and then directly to the computer. I've searched the forums but can't find a direct solution to this problem. I'm also just an average computer user, so please don't be confusing in your answer! Thanks so much for help!!

Before anyone posts solutions, let me take the problem a step further. I jumped the gun a little on the last post. I was not able to find the password for our netgear wireless router in order to connect to 192.168.1.1, and -nobody- i could find had the solution (resetting it didn't work) for overriding the password (typing "admin" in the password spot didn't work either). So i disconnected the router and hooked the ethernet directly from the modem to the comp. The speeds did continue at 10kb/s so i wrote the initial post, but they've picked up to 70's and 80's (still a little confused why since i have a 512 connection). Anyhow, i'd like to get the router back up and running, but I still don't know how to get past the password prompt in order to reconfigure ports. Any advice?
