What's the deal????
I just tried to download the new firmware BCIC and I get a web page to provide user name and password? It hasn't and it doesn't challenge you that way to download BCHC or others.

Edit change:
Just found out that firmwares are listed and then uploaded later. Should be available for download soon..

Also found out the BenQ 1655 has updated firmware----BCIB

Release Reason (1650 BCIC):
1. Updated the writing strategy
2. Improved Power Calibration Judegment.

Release Reason (1655 BCIB):
1. Updated the writing strategy

I tried downloading the new fw update yesterday, but it said it needed a password. So I downloaded BCHC fw instead.

I did d/l it just now and will update later on in the week if my scans don't look any better than my old BCDC fw.

I get a huge spike at the 2 gb mark using the BCDC fw. I still AVG 95 scores with MCC-004/Ty-g03/and SonyD21 media.
Hopefully BCHC fw will take care of that spike. If not, then I'll update her to BCIC fw.

new firmware works just fine for me~ :)

i have only done a few discs thus far, so it is STILL "learning" my media...would i say it's "better" than the BCHC that i've been using since it came out? i dunno..only time will tell~

same settings as before set in QSuite v2.1 burned @8x

good luck for those of you curious as i am in terms of trying new fw as soon as it's released~ :) i like being a guinea pig in this regard...

Hi folks,

I bought my 1655 about a month agao and it came with BCGB firmware ... I think I heard it was first reeleased in China ... so now that I went to download the latest f/w for my 1655 ...

1) I did not see a "BCGB" version on BenQ official site. It had BCHB and then skipped to BCIB.
2) The BCIB version it did not pop up with their Standard designation ... for example BCIB.zip ... it had a lengthy title.

What is the story ...
Q1: Why they did not have the BCGB? Is that suppose to mean something?
Q2: Also, has anyone loaded up the BCIB yet ... and has not smoked the drive?
Q3: Could they put a Spyware in their F/W?

Thanks,
G!

1) I suppose it means they're only keeping the latest two versions, H and I, in this case. While many swear by BCGB, on standard settings (aka SolidBurn is off for known media), all the firmwares are performing pretty much the same, with the only difference being slightly optimized routines for newer and/or troublesome media, which for people on this site is not as important, as we tend to stick with very specific, very high quality media that will produce high quality results every time in any decent burner on the market.

2)I install the newest official firmware the moment I hear about it, and it's always either been an improvement, or no change (from already great results).

3) DVD rewriters are not capable of spying on your system (the firmware contains only information on different media types for burning strategies, as well as logic to deal with problems that arise outside these strategies), so no, a firmware update will never include Spyware functions.

Hi Delateur,

THANKS A LOT for your very comprehensive and to the point response. Especially on item #3.

BTW, I am with you guys on using Quality Media for back-ups ... it pays in the long run. I, personally, use nothing but TYG's and I prefer -R over +R.

Thanks,
G!

Any consensus on the new Firmware yet? Is is good, bad, little of both? It doesn't seem like the CDfreaks like it too much. I got my DW1655 today and I want to flash it to what would be considdered the best firmware so please share your opinion.

'fraid i haven't got around to it yet and probably won't for a while yet. I keep meaning to but i'm using a couple older versions on my 2 DW1650's and they're working fine as they are..

My vote for the 1655 is BCGB. I just got done downgrading and the improvement on my Verbatims was astounding. So far, everything I've read is indicating that BCHB and BCIB are at best equal, and more than likely a bit worse, than BCGB.

Here's a scan I did (the first burn I've done with my new firmware) using my BenQ 1655 with BCGB. The scan was using my LiteOn, but I assure you the burn was with the 1655, and I am VERY impressed:

Creaky, from what I've been reading you aren't missing much.

It seems that many people feel the same as you Delateur, they like BCGB. My drive came with BCHB so I think I'll flash it back. I mostly only use Verbatims anyway and once in a while when I can find TY and MIJ Maxells, which are all supported in the older firmware so I guess I'll be ok.

I also heard BCIB has bad jitter problems...

I went from BCDC to BCIC fw. Before,I had a huge spike at the 2 gb mark, but still 95-97 scores.

Now with BCIC, I get that huge spike at the 3.7-3.8 gb mark, but still a consistant 97 score.

MCC-004 burned at 8x:

@saugmon: You might find that spike goes away if you switch to BCGC, or whatever the 1650 equivalent of BCGB for the 1655 is, as I notice no spikes whatsoever on my burns with that firmware.

@joshewah: I wasn't paying as much attention to jitter, and I'm not sure what a "high" jitter score is, but I don't remember noticing anything out of the ordinary (<10% jitter) using BCIB. But yes, for overall burn quality, BCGB seems the one to beat. It's also worth mentioning you can turn SolidBurn on for both known and unknown media and not suffer from the max speed reduction that is present in BCHB and BCIB.
