Hi, im trying to set up this router for a friend Buffalo WYR-G54, i set it up once about 5 months back and i had some problems with it not automatically picking up the DNS from the ISP etc, i tried to get the numbers from her ISP so i could input them manually but they just got really snotty with me and told me that if the router wouldn't pick the numbers up automatically then it wasn't their problem.

So, now the router completely stopped working i told her to reset it to factory defaults and we would set up from scratch, but again im having the same problem, the router runs a test to communicate with the ISP server so it can get the number but everytime the router say unable to communicate with remote server, i can't really remember what i did last time to get the router working, i think i just kept going through the setup process till it worked, but this time it just point blank refuses to work. I'm banned from going round her house so i have to tell her everything over the phone, but if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

Have her plug the intnernet line directly to her PC. Reboot the modem. Then, after the PC picks up an IP address, run ipconfig /all from a command prompt. Have her write down all the info and manually enter it into the router. Nice and simple, eh?

That sounds bad, my ISP were happy to give me their DNS addresses. You should try and force them out of someone, maybe you'll get through to someone more helpful. Which ISP is it?

The ISP's website often has this. Just plug a PC with DHCP enabled into the modem directly and connect to the internet. Make sure you have a firewall running. Then just go to your Network Connection and click Status->Details and write down your DNS addresses. Alternatively, just drop into DOS and issue:

IPCONFIG /ALL

and write down the DNS addresses.

One thing - I don't know about Buffalo routers or how they set up DNS, but Netgears have atrocious handling of it. You may get better performance if you manually set DNS addresses in each PC. Of course, keyword and domain filtering might not work, so I'd try letting DNS the router assign DNS before setting the IPs manually in your OS.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Lol Netgear routers have atrocious handling of quite a lot of things if my experience with a DG814 is anything to go by...
