Hello Folks,

I have a Sony RB44G along with a SONY DVD RW DW-D22A (BFS1) burner and after limited use it now will not read any type of disc or write any type as well.

I was thinking that maybe a firmware update would help, but can't find one for my burner with the (BFS1) that would work.

I read the response for the individual that had this same drive with a sony RB30, but there is no options for this with the Sony RB44G at least from the sony webpage.

I noticed alot of options with the BYxx types of these drives, but nothing noting any options with the BFS1 and I don't want to rush to flash an inappropiate upgrade.

Assistance is very appriciated!!!!

Creaky. Poiema in the link you provided asks the exact same question as I did, but the link you provided him to another forum didn't provide any answers to the question about the BFS1 burner...all of the answers seemed geared to the BYxx versions of this drive.

I will take any help you can provide and I thank you for your help!

Thanks,

you need BYS3 from here - http://dhc014.rpc1.org/indexOEM.htm#DW-D22A but even that's only dated Nov 2004, so it's still going to struggle to recognise new media

Thanks,

After you made that correlation to go from BFS1 to BYS3 I knew where to go. I guess I just need someone to make that connection.

Anyway, I made a backup of the old BIN file and then flashed the new one and the drive successfully shows the new BYS3 signature as part of the device ID.

It still won't read any disc or write any of them as well. (CD or DVD)

This may be a stupid question, but is it possible that the laser itself is burned out?

Please Advise?

it's always possible, though you say the drive has had limited use. That of course doesn't mean it's not faulty though. DVD burners have two lasers, one for CD's and the other for DVD's so it could be a clue that neither are working. Have any of the discs you've tried been known to work before ?.
Plus can it read normal shop-bought movies/data discs or audio cd's ?

Since this drive was part of a Sony Refurbished resale, I guess even thou I only used it say 25 times, that doesn't mean it wasn't used a lot before I guess.

Anyway, here is where I'm at with the testing...

Blank CD-R = No Read
Store Bought CD = No Read
Blank DVD-R = No Read
Recorded DVD-R = No Read
Store Bought DVD = READ - But real Jumpy and not consistant. (too 3 tries to play)

Every format use to work on this drive before..

Seems the CD Laser is gone, and the DVD one is not far from it.

Any suggestions on a new DVD Drive and maybe a guide for replacement/installion in a Sony RB Series VAIO?
