i was thinking of building a gaming pc with these parts in mind.. does anyone think this would be fine or does anyone have any other suggestions.. LIAN LI PC-V2100 Plus Case, INTEL Core 2 Extreme X6800 2.93GHz or AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4600+ Windsor 2000MHz CPU, GIGABYTE GA-M59SLI-S5 NVIDIA Nforce 590 Sli Chipset or DFI-LP-NF4 SLI DR EXPERT MOBO, 2GB CORSAIR Twinx XMS Matching Pair RAM, CREATIVE Sound Blaster X-FI Xtreme Music SOUND CARD, 2x 750GB SEAGATE Barracuda 7200.10 HDD, 24in SAMSUNG SyncMaster 244T MONITOR, PIONEER DVR-111D & SONY CRX320EE DISK DRIVES, 700W TAGAN TG700-U25 or FSP FX700-GLN PSU, LOGITECH G15 Gaming Keyboard, LOGITECH G5 Gaming Mouse, SWIFTECH Storm Waterblock Cooled By 2x Triple 120MM Fan Radiators & 1x1200MM Fan Radiator For CPU, 2x DANGER DEN Tyee Waterblocks Sharing Radiators With Above For GPU, POLAR Flo WaterBlock Sharing Radiators With Above For Northbridge, 3x ZALMAN ZM-2HC2 Heatpipe Coolers For HDD. EXTRA COOLERS: 40MM Fan On Sound Card, 400MM Fan On VRM'S, 1200MM Fan Above Ram, SWIFTECH MCP655 Pump, XSPC 250 Reservoir. *PLEASE NOTE- The Reason There Is No Graphics Card Noted Is Because Im Thinking Of Waiting For DirectX10 Cards & Vista To Come Out. Or I May Get The GEFORCE 7950 GX2(Is This Wise). This Is My Current System: AMD ATHLON 64 3000+ 2.0GHz CPU, ASROCK K8Upgrade VM800 Socket 754 Mobo, 2GB CORSAIR DDR400 PC3200 Twinx XMS Matching Pair Ram, NVIDIA Geforce 6600 256MB AGP, 250GB SAMSUNG SP2504C Sata HDD, HARMAN/KARDON SOUNDSTICKS II, Onboard 5.1 CH Sound, LOGITECH Cordless Desktop EX 110 Keyboard & Mouse, 1x NEC CD/DVD Drive & 1x TOSHIBA CD?DVD Rewriter, 1x SPEEZE Hard Drive Cooler With 2 Fans, 1x ANTEC VCOOL Case Cooler, 1x LOGITECH Quickcam Express Webcam. Would The Rig I Plan On Building Be A Really Good Gaming PC? & Is My Current System Any Good For Gaming? When I Bought The Pc, It Only Had 256MB RAM, Onboard Graphics, A 20GB Hard Drive(faulty) & No Cooling At All, Except From CPU Heatsink & Fan & PSU Fan.. I Still Need A Case Fan, But Will Get 1 Soon. Any Feedback, Ideas, Or Suggestions Are Welcome.. I Would Appreciate Some Help Here.. THANK YOU

What I would do is just keep your old pc until direct x 10 and vista comes out. They you don't waste alot in cards. I'm going to buy a pc soon and what i'm going to do is just get cheaper card. i mean like 6000 series or up but ya know. Then I'll get a real sweet dx 10 card like 6 months afer vista and them come out.

everything is great, and if you can afford it go for it,but do not get the graphics card yet.rather wait till the begining of next year and get a Geforce 8800gt,it's direct x10 and will blow away any graphics card right now,it's not wize to even buy a 7950 x2,becuz it's not direct x10 capable, which means ur gonna regret it's power, becuz it's pretty useless, even though direct x 10 can throttle to direct x9,i don't think u'd want ur powerfull gpu running poor graphics compared to what it could produce...so just wait till the 8800gt comes out...

You rig fails for two reasons.

1.) 2x 750gB HDDs is stupid. You want a gaming rig, get 2x 150gB 10k RPM WD Raptor HDDs in a RAID5 configuration as your boot and program/game install HDD. By all means keep a 750gB HDD, but not two. Also, put the 750gB in a gb NAS enclosure with proper cooling or inside your case as long as you have good HDD coolers for all three drives (150,150, and 750).

2.) How the hell is the choice not painfully obvious to you that the Core 2 Extreme X6800 the best CPU option?

Listen, go here: http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html and compare/contrast the Core 2 6800 to the X2 4600+.

Also, if you want a gaming rig -now-, then skip the Core 2 and goto an AM2 board with crossfire'd X1900XTXs and an FX-62.

About Vista: There are going to be waaaayy too many problems/bugs/compatibility/performance-optimization issues when it comes out. Also, the only thing I see that's DX10 that I'm interested in is obviously Crysis.

But, hey.. It's all you, bro. Just because current cards don't support DX10 in the hardware sense, doesn't make them worthless. If you have the chance to build a badass rig, do it. Another thing, eVGA has this thing where you can trade in "your current high-end" eVGA card for the latest high-end at the time. So, you could always get a 7950 and trade it in (plus cash) for whatever awesome DX10 card they put out within a year.

Hope this helps any,
j

For the HDD part, isnt a 74 GB WD RAPTOR HDD good enough?! You're not going to do any video editing or anything like that!! If you ever need more space, invest in a DVD-Burner and buy a pack of 100 blank DVD's (-r or +r)!!

Do I have to say this to everyone!?!?!?

P.S.
Just buy a normal wireless keyboard/mouse by logitech! No need of extra uneeded features such as lcd screens!!

P.S. #2
Don't buy vista until XP is completely obsolete!

If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

elokito, uh yeah.. That's obvious. But, point out a core 2 motherboard that is actually intended for gaming and get back to me, k?

I said the FX-62 for gaming NOW, because there are motherboards available NOW for AM2.

Dig? Good.

I hope you don't tell everyone that, because that's a lame idea. The OP is talking about making a theoretical ultimate gaming machine. He wants the fastest load times possible and that happens to be one of two things (without going SCSI). Two (or four) Raptors in RAID5 -or- a 16gB iRAM drive. The iRam drive would put the Raptors to shame in load times and literally load any program compltely in less than three seconds.

I'm just trying to make him save money without losing performance!!

*This guy isn't poor but why waste his cash on HDD space instead of a CPU, [extra] RAM stick, or [extra] Video Card?!?!*
