Help wanted in Vob to Xivd conversion

hi guys i'm new to conversion and i dont know the best settings for this.. will someone pls help me out by..
Suggesting a good freeware software(if freeware is not available any other is ok) for conversion from .VOB to XVID(i dont want DivX, cos it puts its logo in the video)
and the settings which i have to use(the one ppl normally ppl use in those movies we get online.. or those dvd rips of tv series..)(especially the setting where you can convert from 4.7 GB to 1.3GB)
plz i've struggled with this conversion process for some time.. pls help me guys..
i'm pretty new to this so a detailed procedure for setting would be helpful.. plss

The DivX logo is inserted by the DivX decoder on the fly during decoding. It isn't part of the video and can be disabled by checking/unchecking the box in the decoder config. That said I still prefer XviD.
You have the whole DVD or just the VOB's?

i just have .vob files.. what to do?? is it possible to convert only them.. i guess yea.. and i hope yea.. hey pls if possible give a detailed explantion bout the whole process k...

can't coment on GK, but AVI.NET ( http://www.clonead.co.uk ) is incredibly easy to use, will convert VOB's to either DivX or XviD and, incidentally, it doesn't put the watermark in either. It's free too :D
EDIT: The settings couldn't be easier, just choose the desired output filesize and that's it. Generally for an avarage length movie with 2 ch AC3 sound, choose a custom size of 1400 MB. For anything different, keep an eye on the box below the video preview where it says (amongst other things) QF:x.xx the x.xx will be a number. Try to keep this somwhere in the 0.25-0.35 range by adjusting the output filesize or bitrate.

Hi,
Just wanted to say in my opinion autogk is more user friendly to those new to VOB to AVI conversion. Quality wise (and reading the FAQ on clonead) AVI.net has the better finished product.

i dont mind paying for good software.
does anyone know fo any drawbacks to using DivX pro.
i am just looking to convert my personal dvd collection to DivX.
and store them on my pc and playthem thru a network DivX player on my tv.

XviD has better compression properties than DivX... actually the project started as a open source project. but some of then later split to make money by selling it. they called their product DivX.. while the other guys continued the opensource thingy and named it XviD
xvid yurned out to be better than DivX in the end

DivX or XviD is very much a personal choice. I feel that they are both about the same. They use the same quantization matrix (h.263), similar psychovisual algorithms etc. etc. The main difference is one is commercial, one is not.
I personally prefer DivX, mainly because that is the codec I first became familiar with.
About the water mark... It DOES NOT get burned into the movie. It is ONLY on playback that the decoder overlays the watermark to let you know the DivX decoder is running. It is easily switched off in the decoder settings.
I have heard a lot of recommendations towards AutoGK. I myself haven't really used it but it could be a good tool to learn DivX/XviD with. As far as commercial software goes, I find it hard to look past TMPGEnc 3.0 or 4.0 XPress as it can import DVD's directly, has a massive filter base (crop, resize, de-interlace, noise removal, frame rate change etc. etc.) and you can output virtually any format you like (VCD, SVCD, DVD, WMV, AVI (DivX/XviD). Again this is only my opinion but I find this software has the ability to suit a beginner but also is diverse enough to suit advanced users.
Later if you can learn scripting via AVIsynth that will serve you the best as it offers unlimited potential through it's downloadable plug-ins. When you use AVIsynth to filter, then you will be able to use VirtualDub to encode DVD to AVI.
