I am looking for a spare DVD Player. A friend bought a Philips 642 a while ago and says it plays everything. Best Buy has the Philips DVP3040 on sale. Will it play mos of my copied/ backup movioes? What about Verbatim DL disks?

Videohelp.com's database says no, which is surprising because it's a newer model than the 642. Take that with a big grain of salt: I have a four-year-old player that plays homebrew DVDs, including DLs, just fine. The database just means nobody may have tested it.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I bought a 3040. It does play DL disks. And most other disks too.

I just bought a dvp3040/37 today from Best Buy. Xvid/Divx playback was really choppy. Haven't been able to find a firmware fix. Goes back to store tomorrow.

Look into the 5140, maybe the 5960. I understand that they are excellent players. I'm looking into the latter.

FYI, read the first few user comments here:
