This is a question, not a statement. My bloody xbox360 as a media extender only streams wmv's. Sucks I know. I would like to know the best (as far as quality goes) method for ripping dvd's to wmv's. I don't care how long it takes or how big the file is (as long as I can play around with increasing or decreasing the file size). I have half a terabyte for storage, I just want a decent finished product that my kids can stream from their xbox360. I've tried so many bubblegum 3 step programs that I could scream. They all turn out so crappy. Picture sucks and sound is off. Or the aspect ratio is off etc. I don't care if it involves 13 different programs with 20 steps each! I just want something that is duplicatable and works with a good quality video at the end. So any ideas?

I use Sony Vegas for WMV. It uses MS WMV9 encoder. Maybe this is the same:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...n&qstechnology=

What you probably want is 5mbps VBR. WMV9 is pretty effecient, so you will get almost the same picture. You can actually go lower on the bitrate and have about the same picture and even change the framerate and get the whole DVD down to about 1.5 to 2GB and have almost identical picture.

If size does not matter, then you can up the bitrate, but do small samples/clips first because there is a diminishing return on Picture Quality with increased bitrate.

However, I highly doubt that xbox can handle advanced profile, so only use Main profile.

Hey,

I'm working with the following software, so far with good success.

Ripping older DVDs that don't use the newer protection schemes into VOBs: DVD Decrypter

There's a good guide here, but note, I do not recommend the conversion to mpeg using vobtompeg it mentions. MPEG2 has issues on Windows Media Player - no fast forward or rewind, and no skipp;ing into the film.

Ripping newer DVDs that use the newer protection schemes into VOBs:
RipIt4Me, which relies on DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and optionally FixVTS. Note I have not had much luck with using FixVTS and have been skipping that step.

Once you have things ripped and the encryption stripped, you can use any commercial VOB to WMV software. I'm currently using ConvertMovie 4.1. It's shareware, and there's a free trial. With this you can open each VOB, take a look at what's in them, and find the stuff you want to convert. I usually do the AC3, 6 channel tracks, including the english film, and any extras I want to keep. This software can also join these various components together or you can leave them as seperate videos. Don't forget to choose WMV9 for the conversion format, and a bit rate. I'm playing with 2mbps and things seem to be working well. ConvertMovie is a little slow, but I'd much rather use something thats slow than something that's fast but unreliable. There are a slew of VOB to WMV9 converters out there that I have not tried. If you find something better please post here.

Actually I take that back. MPEG2 works great, assuming you have an up to date decoder. I just updated mine after checking the status of my decoders using the Windows XP DVD Decoder Checkup Utility and found mine to be a POS. Updated to the latyest CyberLink and all seems fine.

MPEG2 is much faster in convertmovie than WMV, and you can select higher bit rates than 2mbps - I'm using 10mbps and getting excellent quality video.

The final summary of my steps after a great deal of testing:

1) configure RipIt4Me, DVD Decrypter, FixVTS.
2) Purchase an app like ConvertMovie or find a your favorite freeware or shareware converter.
3) Skip DVD Shrink entirely. It compresses using non intuative controls and doesn't convert to MPEG2 or WMV.

Note, you might have to fiddle with RipIt4Me's path settings to get it to work right. Even if the paths look right try resetting them a couple times, open and closing, etc.. You also need to make sure DVD Decrypter ios putting it's log files in with your video files so RipIt4Me can find them.

4) Pop in your DVD
5) Run RipIt4Me, use Wizard mode
6) Rip, clean, and run FixVTS
7) Close RipIt4Me, Open your converter

8) In ConvertMovie, you can look at each track by double clicking on it. Uncheck anything you don't want. Inspect the main movie to see what it's video and sound bit rates are.

9) When your ready to convert to MPEG2 (Note, I don't rec WMV it's highest bit rate is 2mbps and is SLOW) in ConvertMovie, select MPEG2 on the lower left, and select the advanced button.

10) Uncheck "Same as Video Input" (very important). Crank the sound bit rates up if you like good sound quality. Select your video bit rate. I did comparisons of 1mbps, 3mbps, 5mbps, 7mbps and the DVD is usually going to be around 9mbps. 1 & 3 were not acceptable, too much compression junk. I've decided on either 5 or 7 depending on the film.

11) Select the right aspect ratio based on the film. Foregetting to do this and you'll loose some of you your letter box format videos. Burn a preview a few times with different settings and drag them into the app to be sure. Check to make sure you have it right.

11) Hit the convert button on the content you want. That should do it.
