Bearshare was/is full of spyware. Look in to using torrents or FrostWire or LimeWire.
Be careful with LimeWire though, they got sued for it. Then they made FrostWire which is almost the exact same P2P program.
Oh, and...LimeWire free has crap with it also. Get LimeWire Pro if you want LimeWire.
Hope that helps...

Did you read my post? Bearshare has spyware. Get rid of it. :D
If your on highspeed switch to a torrent client, only downfall with torrents is finding single songs, for this use FrostWire.
There could be many reasons for your slowness:
If your using a router, you have to portforward.
Firewall could be stopping connection to some ports.
Spyware or malware could be hogging you bandwidth.
ect, ect.

Alright, here is my delemia. Only torrents I ever used it seemed like I had to jump through hoops to even get it started. I don't have a lot of time to spend on line hence I am not that savvy. I need something simple, you know.

Then use FrostWire. It's simple. Install, open, search, download.
Just try it out. If you still experience slow speeds let me know. I help where I can.
By the way, do you use a router, firewall or both?

Ok, have you done any portfowarding?
And, have you allowed the program access to the internet through your firewall's settings?

Being a newbie I can't post too often, it won't let me. Sorry, I allowed it to go through my firewall etc but what is portforwarding? Looks like a great site hope I can get to work.

Sorry, I didn't see your post before my last post. Did you go to the main site, FrostWire.com? Try here instead.
You have to portforward if your using a router, that's probably your main slow speeds problem. Any info you need about portforwardiing is available here.
