I am running a WinXP/98SE system with an AMD Athlon 2600+, close to a Gig of RAM,on a Gygabyte 7VT600-RZ motherboard. I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105. I noticed a day ago that the drive would no longer recognize any CD or DVD placed in the drive. It is seen by Windows XP and it says it is working porperly in "Control Panel" but such is not the case. I made sure to upload the most recent firmware (1.33) to see if this would help with no result. I considered that the drive had gone bad so I replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-104 that I happened to have.I uploaded the most recent firmware for it (1.41)and gave it a go. However, this drive also would not recognize any disks. This baffled me so I decided to see if the drive is seen and worked in Windows 98 SE (I have a dual boot system). The drive is seen and "Control Panel" says it is working, but disks are not seen in Win98 either! I can't believe both DVRs are bad as the DVR-104 has been sitting in a box for almost two years and I really haven't burned too many disks with the DVR-105 since I bought it (less the 20 DVDs/CDs burned on it)over a year ago!

I have seen on this forum similiar issues with this same model. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

Try this..........
In your device manager, right click on your burner, and click "Uninstall". After it uninstalls, reboot, and let Windows detect new hardware, and install a new driver for you.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes...............

I tried your suggestion and but it doesn't look like it worked. The DVR is seen in windows but still doesn't recognize any discs. However, I did notice that when I restarted my system, while it was still in bot mod running through the BIOS, I had a CD in the DVR and I know this because I set my system to boot up via CD first then hard drive. It asked me if I wanted to boot up via the CD thus showing it recognized the disc in the DVR. So it appears I can use the player OUTSIDE of Windows. This leads me to believe that it is NOT a hardware problem. Do you have any more suggestions?

If it works outside of Windows, but not in Windows, it sounds like something in Windows is corrupted. You may need to reinstall Windows. You should be able to install on top of the old, so it doesn't mess up everything else.

Maybe someone else has another suggestion.
Good luck!

Okay, let me correct myself. Outside of Windows the DVR initially sees a DVD to the point where it stops the boot up process temporarily waiting for a user command. However, if I try to run the CD, for example to reinstall Windows, it will not access anything.

At this point I would think the DVR is bad, but the fact that this is the second DVR I've tried makes me doubtful of this.

I don't know enough, technically, to suggest any more.
Someone that knows more of the technical aspects of a computer, may have to help now.
Sorry I wasn't more help.........

What I sugested before was to update ur firware and then try to access your drive cause sometimes when it gets old and out of date it will start to play up.

Just flash the firmware on the drive and see if it fixes the problem.

Both DVRs had their firmware flashed to the most recent firmware before I first posted to this forum. DVR-104 is at ver 1.41 and DVR-105 is at ver 1.33 .

Any other suggestions?
