Gonna finally rip the rest of my CD collection, so I'm looking for a drive that (1) rips quickly, and (2) supports the most useful EAC features for getting accurate rips at a decent speed.

Suggestions?

well first off, keep in mind that quality of rips and speed do NOT go hand in hand. You can get a crappy ass ripper that will rip your entire CD in 5 minutes, or you can let EAC rip it the correct way, and encode to LAME or whatever you want in about 30 to 45 mins. Its a speed/quality ratio. Just keep that in mind. When using secure mode in EAC, its not speedy, but is the best and only way to go if you want tru 100% accurate rips.

about drives, any good brand name drive such as Plextor, Pioneer, Sony, TDK, and LiteOn with recent firmware will work just fine. Just don't use a cheap ass one you can buy online for $30...remember you get what you pay for.

check the link in my sig to our guide on how to properly configure and use EAC...good luck!

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

Thanks! Yep, I was just curious as to whether there were drives that ripped faster than others in EAC secure mode. I have a fast dual-core CPU, so the encoding part goes very quickly. I just assumed that some drives work better with EAC than others, and have better feature support. (Such as C2 error correction, etc.)

I currently have a Pioneer and the crappy Plextor that's actually a relabeled Lite-On.

I use my lite-on just for burning CDs, then I use my Pioneer DVDROM drive (DVD-106) I believe for ripping, and I've had no problems with it. As long as you have a good drive you will have decent results. I don't think different brands of drives will have a major impact on speed however. Just one of those things you have to be patient with for good results. :) have fun...
