I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I searched and couldn't find an answer.

I'm using Nero 7 to burn HUGE AVI files to DVD. The AVI files are from the show 'Rome'. There are 12 episodes between 45-55 minutes.

What I've tried (3 times) is to use the wizard that comes with Nero. If I add 4 files it says the quality will be 'poor'. If I remove one it goes to 'normal', and if I go down to 2 and the quality will be 'good'. Also, the red bar for size is not filled so I would assume everything should fit.

When I start the burn process, it goes fine for 3 hours, then I get this error:
There is not enough space to burn this compilation...

And it tells me to use a different disc. But no discs work.

Any ideas?

Are you trying to convert these files to Video Compliant files, or just trying to burn them as data. If data they should fit on your disk if converting you need to compress them.

Thanks for responding.

I'm trying to burn the AVI files to play in my DVD player like a regular DVD.

So not data.

You need to convert the files to Video Compliant files. When you convert these files they blowup to the normal size, as an AVI is a compressed file. A DVD5 disk will only hold 2 hours of video, in order for it to hold more it needs to be compressed again but this time in Video format.

To convert you need to use Nero Vision Express. You can add your files and then create a menu. I would not add any more than four episodes as this is gonna be about 60% compression. Output your file and say you want it done in DVD9, this way you can then run it through Nero Recode or Shrink when you are done. The error message you are getting is because of the size if you put in a DVD9 disk it would copy over.

Here is a guide on the basics of Nero Vision.

So close!

I did everything you recommended, but when I play the DVD in my DVD player I get a constant chirping noise throughout.

Any ideas?

One more thing. The DVD files that were written to my hard drive contained the chirping also.

I'm guessing it's a problem during the extract/conversion, but I have no clue what settings to change.

I am having a very similar problem. Using Nero Vision 4.5.0.29 to convert an AVI file to DVD, I set the quality to Automatic (fill to disk). The final burn page reports Total space used: 4.37 out of 4.38 GB (Quality: Average) but when it finishes transcoding it says that my disk is too small and to replace it. BTW, the movie is 1:48 long.

I burned the project to my hard drive and checked properties of the VIDEO_TS folder - 4.66 GB. Nero Vision seems to be transcoding the file much bigger than the 4.38 GB limit. I also tried changing the quality to Long Play at a lower bitrate which "should" have lowered the final size to 3.88 GB. Still didn't work. The final VIDEO_TS folder is 4.54 GB which is smaller, but still too big.

Any ideas?

I too have discovered this problem. Quality set to automatic and am told in the burn report that I have used 4.37GB out of 4.38GB. However I know that a movie I burned last week successfully using these setting now gives me the "There is not enough space to compile to this disk" etc.

Any ideas?

You folks might try using NeroVision to export the files first. That will put them in a DVD ready state and perhaps give you a better idea of how large they will be.

That being said, NeroVision has had some problems with certain types of .avi files, but I can't pin down which ones. Possibly, some software doesn't produce files that are completely compatible with Nero and gives it fits.

The chirping noise I don't know about, but you might try using a different type of audio settings. It may be a sign of something in the file Nero can't recognize, just guessing though ;)

Was the chirping in one channel only?
My original AVI was PAL (BBC). I moved up from 7.2 to 7.5 and no more problem. I think 7.2 worked previously, but...
