Hey guys,

I've read several horro stories about people getting caught for ripping cd's/dvd, or downloading music/movies/software from the internet using P2P software or torrent software like limewire or bittorrent. Most of what I read is news from the United States.

Can anyone tell me where I can find this information for Canada?

I've heard bothsides of the coin on this issue that it IS illegal and that it is NOT illegal in Canada. I know it's illegal to SELL the copied/downloaded material but is it legal to copy/DL for personal use?

Ok, i don't know all the answers, but here goes :

Copying music and dvd's for personal use is legal, as most countries have laws that entitle the owner to 1 copy of the material.
America is the only exception here, as they seem to have banned any and all copying entirely.

Last thing i heard downloading was still legal in Canada, but it's been a while, so getting some more confirmation would be a good idea.

I read one article (on afterdawn.com I think) about a guy that was being sued because he apparently used a torrent program to download a movie. Wish I could remember all the details. I do know he mentioned he was going to fight them in court instead of paying the $1200 (even though he's a millionaire) because he owned a copy of the movie and had no reason to download it.

how would they even find out that he downloaded it? Does the internet provider watch you and notify them?

The MPAA and RIAA and their foreign counterparts hire IT firms that will go online with P2P programs and Bittorrent and such, who then Log all the data they can get about people that illegally share copyrighted material.
These firms hand that data over to the big companies who then proceed to sue the f*ck out of the filesharers.

Irish--that was a news story here on AD, I'm sure you could find it.

And no, copying isn't legal in canada, they just don't have any law enforcement that feel like it's their duty to police it over all the other crime that goes on.

Basically, if you own something, you can do what you want with it, so long as you don't distribute it. Sharing even one byte of it, though, is illegal. Boo hoo.
