O.K. I'm pretty new at backing up my DVD movies. A few months ago I tested a few programs and settled at the time on Video Vault. But later I had problems with Video Vault and just gave up. Now that a little time has passed, I'm interested again in copying my DVDs to prevent the originals from getting scratched. I would probably leave out bonus features and all subtitles except English, but I'd like to use software that will provide very good quality (near-original quality) without flickers and problems during the movie playback. Every websearch I do has a different company pushing a different product. Can some of you pros lay out the basics for DVD ripping for me and others? Most of the questions in this forum are much more specific. I just want to know which software will do the best job for me for old and new DVD movies whether it is free or expensive. Thanks!!!

There are obviously many answers to your question (I have about 30 audio/video related programs myself). But if you just want a single product that can do it all (and don't mind paying some money), I would say DVD Fab Platinum:

jasonlhea hi :)
if you wish to extract movie only, do as i do
go here and down load dvdshrink..dvddecrypter and AnyDVD to run in the background to get rid of the protection
shrink and decrypter are FREE
anydvd is not, but gives you a free trial period with the option to buy (worth every penny)

then follow guide

jasonlhea do you want to use free programs to backup your movies or is purchasing software an option?

Pay Programs: Well for simplicity/ease of use there is no better than AnyDVD and CloneDVD2 ($59 for both. For me this combo is usually able to rip and burn the main movie only in 2-15 minutes. The quality is very good compared to some other gimicky programs and the interface used to guide people through the backup process is very user friendsly. They are updated frequently (AnyDVD more frequently the CloneDVD2). And after the initial payment of $59 both programs are free to update forever. For absolute best quality with 1 click ease their is DVD-Rebuilder pro. It takes anywere from 2 1/2 -3 hours normally. To use it you either need a ripper to rip the files and then procces them through shrink or you will need a program like AnyDVD running in the background. The "Pro" version can outpput to a iso file which you can then burn with ImgBurn.
Recap:
AnyDVD w/ CloneDVD2: For the money their is no better duo. They can handle any movie with aplomb while keeping quality high and time spent to a minimum
DVD-Rebuilder Pro: It will produce the best quality bar none, it takes a long time, lots of configuration options
Free software: There is so much free quality software I can not go into too much depth with my descriptions. So by category:
Rippers: There are 2 free quality mainstream rippers. The infamous DVD Decrypter. Popular but has trouble handling the new encryptions.
There is also DVDFab Decrypter a ripper that while limited in options is overall very capable. It is updated often for the newer encryptions but unlike DVD Decrypter (which can rip just the main movie, the full disc, to a iso, etc) DVDFab Decrypter always rips the entire movie. Then there is the new RipIt4Me. This program CAN handle the newer protections, but it alone cannot rip a movie. It uses DVD Decrypter as a ripping engine. It creates a PSL file which is used in DVD Decrypter to (basically) tell it how to rip the movie. The ripped files are then passed through FixVTS to "clean them up", and then sent to DVD Shrink to shrink them to fit on a blank disc.
Recap:
*DVD Decrypter- Capable,Dated,Trouble with newer encryptions.
*DVDFab Decryoter- More powerful then DVD Decrypter, limited to full movie only
*RipIt4Me-can handle all movies, requires DVD Decrypter, with it it rips, cleans video files, and shrinks them (it uses other programs to do this.
"Shrinkers": There are too many programs in this category DVD Shrink and the free version of the DVD-Rebuilder program. DVD Shrink and DVD-Rebuilder (the free version is version 0.97 I believe) they are both very similar in feature set so i wont go into comparison there. The real difference between the too is quality and speed. DVD Shrink can do a couple things to maximize quality. It will encode your movie in in 2 passes to better distribute the compression and give better quality. The other options in DVD Shrink is called "High Quality Adaptive Error Compensation" here is what the DVD Shrink "About" file says about (H.Q.A.E.C)Quote: Compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation
When video is compressed, small errors or artifacts are introduced. This is an unavoidable consequence of video compression, and DVD Shrink cannot prevent this from happening. However, it can keep these artifacts to a minimum.
This option will adaptively compensate for any artifacts introduced by the video compression, so as to prevent them from propagating into the next pictures which are compressed. This requires DVD Shrink to dynamically decode and compare both the original and the compressed video, so that it can detect if artifacts have been introduced and compensate for them accordingly.
AEC (adaptive error compensation) requires a lot of CPU power, and depending on the speed of your computer, it may take an hour or more to complete your backup. However, it will often provide a far superior video quality. AEC will also benefit from deep analysis.
As for DVD-Rebuilder Pro it is basically a basic version of the program. It is free but lacks many features which DVD Shrink and DVD-Rebuilder Pro possess.
Recap:
*DVD Shrink - Proven software, produces quality backups, can burn with Nero,ImgBurn,DVD Decrypter,
*DVD-Rebuilder- Produces very good quality, limited configuration options, limited functionality, time consuming, can't output to a .iso
**Note: there is a piece of software called ShrinkTo5 it is not as dependable as either program listed above and other free it has some features unavaible unless payed for. all in all its best to stay away from this one.
Burners:
For burning dvd's there is only 1 option. ImgBurn. It can burn image files (.iso), it can build image files, very dependable, DL burning capable.
hope it helps - PeaInAPod :)

hi, i am trying out a few dvd backup solutions and i like video vault for its features but i am having problems with the videos imported. I got skipped frames in one but I'm not sure if its a problem with my computer or VV. The files are >3gb. I get what looksked liked lost frames. I rewinded a little and it happened again at the same point in the movie, but after I rebooted and played again, skipping to that part, there is no more discontinuity. I have p4 2.8Gz, ~625 ram. I was using powerdvd at the time. I had another issue with win mp where it wouldn't start up again after i finished watching one of the other movies i imported and had closed it. Any recomendations for a media player that manages large single files well?
thanks.
