After installing an ASPI layer, I now have successfully decrypted a DVD using SmartRipper 2.41. I have a folder created comprised largely of VOB files totalling 7 GB. Now I think I would like need to encode to MPEG2 and burn to DVD-R. Anyone with suggestions on which software to encode with and how to proceed??
Thanks in advance!

You don't obviously have a very strong idea yet how the DVD to DVD-R backup is performed. I suggest that you read through the posts in this forum and in doom9's guide section in order to understand the process better.

You're certainly correct! I had read through Doom9 and taken copies of VOBrator and IFOEdit. I have spent some time understanding them and looking at my DVD directories. Looks like Nero is the software of choice for DVD-R backup. On the right track now??

Basically yes. There are simply 4 ways to backup DVD to maintain the DVD's structure/menus/etc:

1) DVD is smaller than 4.36GB (including everything on the disc) -> read our guide from http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/ for DVD Decrypter (this is the easiest method)

2) DVD is slightly over 4.36GB, like 4.8GB -- try to strip out useless subtitles and audiotracks and see if that makes it fit into 4.36GB. If so, simply burn the results.

3) If the DVD is way over 4.36GB and you want to make it fit into one DVD-R, you need to re-encode the video file (which lowers the quality) with either ReMPEG2 or with TMPGEnc.

4) If the DVD is way over 4.36GB, but you don't want to weaken the quality, try to split it into two discs with IFOEdit.
