Ok, I recently bought a used IBM T20 laptop. It worked fine when I was checking it out before I bought it and that night when I had it at home. Now heres the problem, when I boot it up, it displays the tilted IBM Thinkpad screen but when you try to go into the bios or wait for it to load the OS, it just lockes up. It doesnt do anything past that point. I think my dad even tried to load a bootable disk and it still didnt work. I know this has to be a hardware problem but what could it possably be? Any USEFULL help will be very appreciated. Thanks.

Can you get into the BIOS at all? In either case, there may either be a faulty component or the system has been overclocked too far. Either of these situations really involve pulling the laptop cover, don't know how happy you'd be with doing that.

actually, I found out that it was giving a error code. It makes a long beep followed by 2 short beeps and a readable screen.

I cant stand the suspense, more details. What did the screen say and what do those beeps for your machine mean (I'm too lazy to look right now) I'm sure between the beeps and the message you can search the problem.

Does it give a code number?

After looking around on the IBM site this is what I know so far: When it boots up, it gives a long beep followed by two short beeps code. The screen displays the tilted IBM Thinkpad logo and says the F1 and F12 commands. If you let it sit, it will just lock up. If you press F1, it will display "enter bios setup" or something like that then locks up. If you press F12, it will display "loading boot selection screen" or something like that then, as expected, it locks up. I've been looking around and still havent found what the code means. Im going to look some more to see if I can find out.

One long and two short beeps is not good. This is what I found.

System board failure; Video adapter problem; LCD assembly failure

Could be one of these three. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news man, but you bought a bum laptop I think.

Is it an "oi, you sold me a duff laptop, take it back"-able purchase?

Then he's an idiot, and you got ripped of, I'm afraid. You can try taking it to a repair shop, but it's going to cost a fair amount.

You could also part it out on Ebay or something. You would at least be able to recover some of the money. Good luck with whatever happens.

Actually, I wanted to try and fix it with as little money as possible then sell it for parts if I cant get it to work.
