Hi all,
looking for a little help as relative newbie to EAC/LAME. I have the following: LAME 3.97b2 and EAC V0.9 b4. I rip and encode all in one step. I notice that once the process of ripping CD to MP3 is done the MP3 file states this is 128kbps? I was under the impression that the vbr presets would override this despite this. basically I am unsure what this means - if I am encoding at cbr 128? or vbr presets are being used? If someone could clarify for me it would be greatly appreciated? Thanks!

P.S.-I used instructions from ChrisMayden.com-"best MP3 guide" on setting this all up.

do you have eac pointing to the lame.exe file, and ran the config files, so setup the vbr method? check the compression settings again.

Under EAC>comp. options> external compression tab....it says C:\Program Files\Exact Audio Copy\lame.exe. I think this is what you are referring to and really what is confusing me because under that where is state "bit rate" it says 128 kbps. I had heard that it does not matter what this says because the vbr preset overrides this. don't know if this is true? also my created mp3 files all state 128kbps as I was hoping to see a number more reflective of a vbr? hope you can help! thanks again!

I just check on mine. Under the lame.exe, it is selected at 192. Then on the LAME DLL tab I have 320 bitrate, with 0 quality and vbr setting. give this a try, as all the mp3s I have ever created are ~256kpbs vbr which is plenty of bitrate.

thanks,
i looked, but where will I find this? I don't have a lame DLL tab either which also may be my problem. Perhaps I should just re-install from scratch unless you have any ideas. thanks again.

check the steps of the guide again and make sure you didn't miss anything. did you copy the lame.exe and other lame files to the EAC folder? Also make sure you have the external lame encoder selected as the chosen encoder to use. sounds like something is just a little messed up with the setup. don't worry though...I know its a pain in the butt to configure EAC and LAME...thats why most newbies don't even bother, they'd just rather use their stupid itunes or something. but us good audiophiles only trust one ripper and one encoder :) good luck, check the guide again and post back with any more questions. peace!

thanks for the advise!
I just reinstalled the whole thing and I must have missed something before. Now the alt preset standard is showing up and encoding at the proper bit rate (about 196). The new poblem is that the log I created stated the mode is "burst" rather than "secure" which I have read it should be? any help? I tried re-loading the CFG file which did not help.

go into settings>drive options>extraction method tab. make sure you have secure mode selected and not burst. if you have secure selected and the log file still says burst, it is probably just a glitch with EAC. you can easily tell when EAC is ripping which method is being used. if it is going relatively slow, between 5 and 10X ripping, then it is secure mode. but if it is going really fast and ripping a track in 30 seconds, then its burst mode.
glad you got everything working. it is a pain to setup and configure, but WELL worth it!
