As states in the thread title, ive lost alot of important (very) coursework when my harddrive crashed a week or 2 ago.

The symptoms are:

It clicks when it attempts to start up windows.

It gets to the screen where it asks you how you want to start windows (normally, with safe mode, with networking)

whichever option you pick, it gets to an Emachine screen, does some more clicking, then starts again, and so on and so on.

A guy in pc world said we need a new harddrive, and we bought a new one, and its working now.

But, ive just realised that i hadnt backed up ALL of my coursework, so i need it desperately. I was just wondering if its possible to recover anything, if i take it to a store? Or do i have to start again? How much am i looking at? Is there specialist places to do it on the net or am i better off just getting it done at a shop.

Thanks
Billy

It sounds seriously f**c*d, if its clonking then something has broken rather than jsut corrupt.
There are places that can get data off even broken hdd's but the cost could be seriously prohibitive to most personal users
Best to call here and ask rather than me guessing what the actual cost is likely to be

what you could do is hook the HD up (as a 2nd HD) and see if windows can fix your disc errors and maybe grab you info off of it. This has worked before for me and mayabe it will work for you.

billybob,
What geestar20 said but remember to set it as a slave drive using the jumpers on the back.If you get into windows,go to my computer and see if the drive is there. If it is and you can access it just copy everything over to your new drive.

have you try the software recovermyfiles its not free but works like a charm. It can take up to 12 hours to recover as long as its not the HD itself. Also u might think twice about selling ur pc with its hard drive.I used a boot disc to wipe my HD using DOD,after this they say ur HD is safe, not,it recovered the last 4 os that had been installed on the HD.

I use a program called SpinRite from Gibson Research Corp. (http://www.grc.com/intro.htm). It costs $89 for a new license, is a small download and does a lot of lower-level repairs of HDD's. I'm not an expert, but I've recovered multiple hard drive's worth of information from "dead" or "dying" drives using SR. Some of them were seeking incorrectly, some of them were making noise as they frantically looked for data that was corrupted, but most of the drives got going well enough to boot into windows and copy the files over. Using this with the other suggestion (using it as a slave drive) may help. Good luck!

Note: SpinRite is a boot cd, and the purpose of it is to repair damaged parts of the Hard Drive. It can be used for maintainance and repairing HDD's that don't work, but you have to boot into windows to transfer the files -- it only makes the drives work better.

your windows disc will also repair corrupt mbr table on hard drives.
recovermyfiles is a pure software data recovery it dosent repair hard drives also it is some times wise to seek out the maker of ur hard drive as they will give you the mbr table repair tool.
A friend of mine loaned his hard drive to a work mate ,the guy forgot to set it to slave turned his 80GB hhd to a 20GB we tried SR but it couldnt repair the mbr table ,went to the maker of the hhd and they gave us the repair tool free ,his 20GB is back toits right size 80GB.not bad for free. But at the end of the day its everyone to there own.
