I am getting an error when I try to burn dvds with DVD Shrink, the error comes after the dvd has been decrypted and Nero sarts the burn prosses, it gets to writing lead in and then hangs and gives an error the buring was unsuccesful and gives the following message.

So now some details for you, the PC is Dell the DVD drive is a LG i think HL-DT-ST GDR8162B and the DVD RW is NEC ND-3550A. I have upated the firmware on the NEC to 1.06. I have checked the DMA's in the device manager and they are on, I have unintstalled Nero and reinstalled nero(made sure I deleted all folders), I changed the compressed size of the output file in DVD Shrink so I wasnt burning on the edge, I did windows update, I have downloaded and put in a new WINASPI.dll from Nero and still no luck. Can anyone help me?

Also the PC is running windows xp home sp2. PC is 2.4 GHZ with 512 Ram.

1st thing let's edit out that serial # - begins w/ 1a - at the top of your log.
Even though your firmware is update to date your drive only sees the media as Media type: DVD+R. So your drive doesn't fully recognize the media.
You are also getting a few of these - SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND
Drive isn't really liking this media.
Which brand are you using?
Good to use would be Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji, Sony or Maxell.
Burn process failed at 16x
Take it down to 8x or lower. See if that's helps.
Your dvd-rom drive HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off is not in DMA mode. Best to have it in DMA mode - but probably not playing into your burn failure. Here's a link if needed:

Binkie thanks for your help. I am using Sony DVD's. HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off is not in DMA mode, I checked this and it says it is in DMA mode, but I beleive you are right when you say you dont think it has anything to do with the burning problem.
I will check later to see what happens with I slow it down to 8x and try the other veresion of Nero.

Keep us posted on the outcome.
Sony's are usually pretty good - I'm kinda surprised with the latest firmware from, 8/06 your drive is not recognizing the media info or codes.
For the DVD Rom - in device manager check what is in 'current transfer mode' should say Ultra DMA Mode & a #. You can also look in Nero ToolKit>Info Tool>Configuration tab and it will show if DMA is on or off. Looks to me like it's in PIO mode - if using this drive to read will be slower.
And don't forget to edit the serial # from your post.

Ok now we have a power calibration error.
Since your reinstall you now have Roxio installed: File 'Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS'
Nero & Roxio don't always play well together so uninstall Roxio & run the zap tool to remove all traces.

Those Sony's still aren't recognized by the drive - still seeing this:
Media type: DVD+R.
You're also still getting these SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND drive isn't liking the media.
Take the burn speed down to 8x or lower - log still shows 16x.
If all this fails - time to try different media like Verbatim or made in Japan only Fuji or Maxell.

Ok I have not removed Roxio yet. I have tried different burn speeds. The DVD's are DVD+R and I have tried different DVD's, also tried different speeds.
This is my moms computer I am going over later this afternoon to remove the Roxio.
I have the same Drive and I using the same DVD's.
Sony DVD's did work a couple of times on my mom's PC.

Try the Roxio and bit see how it goes.
Check the drives connections too - ide and power. Might want to try and another power connector. Or even swap the burner to master and the dvd rom to slave (change jumper pins too).
What other brands of DVD have you tried?
Sony's burning fine on your pc?

I think Nero err's when it reports DMA mode when certain Intel Ultra ATA Storage chipsets are installed.:

Txs for the link! Intel confirms it.
Another one Nero doesn't display correctly is Nvidia controllers.
You can usually tell how they are connected under Scsi-Device-Map
You'll usually see nvidia or raid in the line of the drive to tip you off.

We also have tried Memorex. My mom has had the drive for about 6 months. I have had mine for like 4, but I am running an AMD processor.
The drive has no problem reading disks, so I dont think it is a cabling issue. If the Roxio removel doesnt work I think I will call and see if I can get a replacement drive. I am not sure how long we have to call it in but I was thinking a year or something.

Well I decided to go back to 1.05 for the firmware and then I removed Sonic MyDVD and Sonic DLA, and now it is burning.
I am not sure if they were installed before I did the reload of windows or not, or if she installed them right before the problem begain.
But anyways thanks binkie7!!

Dang that power calibration error again.
Ok - the Roxio driver that can conflict with Nero - Drivers\CDRALW2K.SYS is still in the log. So Sonic may not have been it. This is another program that now uses Roxio's driver but for the life of me I can't remember which one - Winamp maybe?
The drive w/ or w/o the newer firmware still doesn't recognize the Sony's - only seeing Media type: DVD+R. May want to try Verbatim's.
Burn process failed at 16x Try 8x and see if that does the trick.
I would try and change the power connector to another one. May have one that is going bad.
Now here's all that Nero has listed on their site for this error (applies ot dvd's too):
I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?
Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.
Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.
If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.
Please try the following solutions:
* Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.
* Try another brand of CD-R or CD-RW media.
* Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.
* Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.
* Send the recorder in for service.
Try the suggetions and let's see how that goes.

I called NEC and told them what all I have tried and they said that they would allow me to return it and give me a new one. So we are sending it back. Hopefully the new one will work.
