Hi,
I hope someone can help me with this, i`ve got my pc connected to the internet in my front room but i`ve got my son a pc of his own for his bedroom and i want to know how i go about setting the internet up on it in his bedroom, what extra equipment do i need and wires etc. Also would both pc`s be able to go online at the same time.

If you have a high speed internet connection (ie. DSL or cable) all you would need is a router. The internet connection would run to the router and the PCs would connect to the router as well. Make sure you have a network card in your sons PC. A good router shouldnt cost more that $75. You will obviously need some cabling as well to make the cable run to your sons room. If you dont want to run the cable, you could consider going wireless as well. It will just cost a bit more.

Edit: To answer you question, yes. Both PCs would be able to go online at the same time using a router and high speed internet.

Thanks for that, the cable i need is it like telephone cable. Do i definatly need the network card and do i need it in both pc`s.
I can see this taking me all day to figure out!

given that you have a broadband connection:
yes, both computers must have a network card. if you're staying hard-wired and use a router, you will need standard cat5 ethernet networking cable to connect each computer to the router.

the cat 5 cable connector looks like a telephone connector but has 8 wires instead of 4 for telephone. look at the backside of each computer to see if have the female end of the cat 5 in/on the computer. pci network cards can be bought for about $12 & up. wireless pci cards or usb adapter go for $30 or more.

Ok right i went pc world and bought a Belkin wireless G router, a wireless G USB network adapter and a network card, got home fitted the network card in, but the instructions for the router says to take the wire that goes from the modem to the pc and put it in the router but the wire that comes from my modem is a usb and theres no usb part on the router just holes for telephone connections. I know one wire that comes with the router is a telephone connection end but now i dont know what to put in the other part, ive tried a modem cable with the telephone connection on the end but that dont work either. On the instructions aswell it says that the modem light should come on or should flash on the router but it doesnt the internet light on it flashes instead but all the other lights that are supposed to come on do, so im going back to pc world today but if anyone can help here because im completly stuck for what to do now, im tempted to take it all back and get my money back.

On the back of the cable modem, there should be 2 connections that allow you to hook the modem to your PC. One is a USB and the other is a Ethernet connection (what you refer to as a telephone connection). You need to unplug the USB cable from the modem and use an ethernet (cat5) cable and plug it into the back of the modem and the 'Internet' port on the router. Once they are connected together, power cycle both of them to make sure that you router gets a valid connection to the modem. Once you have power cycled both of them, plug another ethernet cable into one of the free ports on the back of the router and plug the other end into the network card in the PC. Lets not worry about wireless right now. We are just going to concentrate on getting the router working. Once you have connected the wire to the PC, reboot the PC. The internet should now work.

Edit: Make sure you have installed your network card into your PC and that the drivers are installed.

Let me second that on Belkin, and also Netgear. If you can return it, get something better like a D-Link. Also, unless you definitely absolutely must-have wireless, don't get wireless.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I guess I wouldn't have anything but LinkSys, mainly because it is so easy to set up, and I have never had a problem with it.

Ok thanks for that,I didnt really know what i was looking for just knew i needed a router and the guy at pc world shoved the belkin one in my face, guess i should have come here first.
