I am having trouble recently playing .mpg and .mpeg on my computer. After reading some of the threads and the FAQ on this site I suspect a codec conflict and plan to follow the instructions for unloading/reloading my codecs but I have found a new wrinkle. I was runing GSpot and noticed that one of the files I was testing showed as being an AVI even though the extention was .mpg. I tried re-naming the file to an AVI and bingo, the file played. I tried several other .mpg's, even those that showed in GSpot as mpg's, and sure enough they play if I change the extention to .avi. Some of these files are new, some have been in my machine for years. About 5-10 seconds into the first file I play I get an error message
"Your device is using an outdated driver that is no longer supported by Windows Media Player. For additional assistance, click Web Help."
If I click on web help it brings me here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows...inalid=C00D118E
If I close the error message the file continues to play and I can continue to play files that I have changed to .avi until I close wmp.
It seems to think I am tryign to download from or to a portable device. The only thing remotly like this I have added recently is my new Samsung sgh-d807 phone that can play mp3's and exchange files with the computer. This did come with it's own software, Samsung PC Studio that may have loaded audio/video codecs but it seems to use some propritary video format.
I am running XP sp-2 and was using WMP10 which I tried re-installing. When that didn't work, I reluctantly installed WMP11 beta2.
GSpot shows all needed codecs present and none show as "broken".
Thanks in advance for any help,
Max

xvwdvw, you're not the only one with this problem. Samsung PC Studio seems to be the problem. I had to uninstall PC Studio and then reinstall new codecs to be able to play mpegs again. For more info, see this thread in another forum:

Doing a search on Google I found the following thread on another forum:

Installing the K-lite codec pack and 'Cyberlink MPEG-2 decoder' seems to solve the problem. Note: I've not tried this myself yet, but I will report back here when I do.

Okay, the above worked for me. I selected everything from the K-lite installation options apart from the 'classic Media Player', and one of the codecs which the installer warned might cause playback problems (I forget which one exactly).
