Output from VirtualDub exceeds 4.0 GB limit

I'm pretty new at this. I tried using VirtualDub to read a ripped DVD, trim some scenes and write it to my hard drive so I can use Nero Express to add my own menu. I get about 5 minutes into the episode and VirtualDub halts. It seems I can't get past the 4.0 GB file limit because of a FAT 32 hard drive. Why is the file so large? Two one hour episodes on the original DVD were only 4.0 gigabytes.

I tried reading the ripped VOBs directly into Nero Express, but when I produce the DVD, there is a noticeable and annoying gap where Nero Express transfers from one VOB to another.
