IS EDONKEY2000 finally gone ??????

hi ALL: just wondering if fellow Edonkey2000 (P2P)- users know what exactly happened. tried to reboot my edonkey2000 and the home page is gone. the message reads something to the effect that the edonkey2000 network has been shut down !!!! please uninstall edonkey2000....then when you close the window it tries to load the 'uninstall'-the site gives little info -and the forum links-(including overnet)- are dead....
they claim it is due to a recent decision against another P2P software company and in that suit the courts ruled 'software companies' as well as private individuals could be held liable for software pirating...
edonkey2000 awhile back was aquired by 'Metamachines'..and i won't comment on this SOFTWARE Producer as it would be RUDE and inappropriate language-but i will say they have not been the most support friendly and have been trying to weasel there way out of supporting older versions of edonk and overnet the case with overnet is with continious popup messages of security leaks-uprade to edonk200 and now this with ed2k with shutting down the servers
..now i see a site where Metamachines is offering a edonk 2007 ...
most when originally buying Edonkey2000 or with me (overnet)- got a 'SUBSCRIPTION TO UPGRADES'-but now they want you to buy -edonkey2007's subscription again -9and they once again offer a 'lifetime subscription' ....I can't believe this!!! Sounds to me since MetaMachines aquired EDONK-they are trying to worm their way out of honouring the lifetime subscriptions to Edonk's previous versions (Including Overnet version's )- please if any have any comments or advice and any who have tried the new 2007 version to let me know in this thread-and any advice on what they think is the BEST -alternate P2p program out there-thinking of going to Emule as the next best thing..what do you think ????
Oh and BTW- (since the closing of the server's for Edonk 2000-not getting the "overnet bug " -messsages anymore ...hmmmmm

After the Supreme Court ruled against Grokster last year, an unknown meteorological object was spotted in the sky. It wasn't a bird and it wasn't a plane, but it was falling?fast. It was a hammer.
This year, the RIAA law-hammer fell hard on file-swapping sites. Companies like iMesh struggled to go legit, while Kazaa coughed up more than $100 million to the RIAA and pledged to mend its ways. Now eDonkey has gone bust, coughing up $30 million in exchange for not being sued.
MetaMachine, Inc, the small startup behind eDonkey, had been doing well. File-sharing on their network last year accounted for nearly one-third of all Internet traffic and revenue from advertising and software sales topped $2 million a year. Unfortunately, most of that revenue flowed in because users wanted to swap copyrighted material. After the Grokster decision, MetaMachine found itself on shaky legal ground.
The eDonkey site has been shuttered, and now says only, "If you steal music or movies, you are breaking the law." It also displays your IP address and warns that it has been logged. The logging is only a scare tactic, of course; there's nothing illegal about visiting the company's website, or even in downloading the software.
The RIAA is predictably thrilled. "With this new settlement, another domino falls, and we have further strengthened the footing of the legal marketplace," Mitch Bainwol, chairman and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, said in a statement. MetaMachine has also agreed to stop distributing all versions of its software.

Thanxs Ireland -your reply is a bit more explainitory than mine. So i gather from this ED2K 2007 is dead too. ??????? seems the RIAA as a result of the 'illegal' copyright material downloading is running it for all in the peer sharing world and THEY have the money to LOBBY this -much more than the p2p software companies.....but i wonder how they will fair against the likes of the 'e-mule project', and other OPEN SOURCE programs, where not so much MONEY but also FREEDOM is the issue..... : 0

Thanks for that Wif and ireland,, I'm not very good onuderstanding these things but I nearly s...t myself when I tried ed last night and got the IP LOGGED message. I have Bitcomet don't really understand the ins and outs but it seems to work pretty well,am I still ok to use that or is it time to call it a day.

Hopefully the 'open source' projects-'will last a while'-i cannot see the complete disapearance of the p2p network, as even 'Bit torrent' doesn't(and correct me here, if i am wrong)- have the search engine unigue to p2p. i am looking at various p2p program's still available. e-mule i find slow,Shareza i wasn't too happy with the search results and servers. I am expirementing now with "MLDONKEY" -as i hear it is quite fast and SPEED is the main thing I amm looking for-(and it is able to use the edonkey servers -which are still up-(don't think MetaMachines can shut those down.)- MLdonkey-OPEN SOURCE-and runs BARE-BONES-from the task tray but has a -(3rd-party)-front-end GUI, called 'Sancho'also freeware-not sure guess is open source too( you know 'Poncho Villa's' -side kick -road a DONKEY- and his name was Sancho-cute huh !!)-that seems pretty good and probably, what i will go with, but will have a looksie at 'Bitcoment'-thanxs 'beermonty'-as checking out all the options for best search to speed ratio-thanxs your reply-AND PLEASE ANYONE WHO CAN RECCOMEND A PROGRAM THAT THEY HAVE HAD GOOD RESULTS WITH SPEED AND SEARCH CAPABILITIES PLEASE REPLy HERE-seems to me, the best 'searches'-are the edonk servers as they seem to have the largest file sources....and next to 'OVERNET" -my first (LOVE)- p2p and STILL THE BEST TO ME-though (also Metamachines) it has the same problem (though decentralized)- must use the samee 'boot strap server' as the donk -and you recieve same messages and have the same problem finding available sources- go fig... : ((( ..thanxs again all, and let me say also THIS IS A GREAT SITE-been reg'ed here about three yrs.and still my first choice and referal for audio-video stuff-and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the GUIDES to others-thanxs to the members who put them together - very useful and very proffessional in covering the issue at hand : )))))

Ok I just ran edonkey today and it did that whole uninstall thing. I went to edonkey2000.com and it gave me some message about how illegal downloading is wrong and then it said "your IP Address is .... and you have been logged" What's that supposed to mean? Are they gonna keep a close eye on everyone who goes to the edonkey homepage or are they just bs'ing? Because right now im hesitent to download anything of off and network in fear that the RIAA is closly monitoring all traffic coming in and out of my computer!

Its kinda like one of those little avatars from danasoft.com sure it shows you your ip address but do they really record it? probably not.

Okay John K and ALL you-(past-tense)-EDONK (and wantabe-present-tense)- users..... a little update. The Edonk servers are still there and are still active-( don't think 'MetaMachines' can do anything about that, as i don't think they own the servers!! ?? !!-though not sure about this)- if you look around for 'boards' dealing with EDK2-(and you will have to do this yourself-as i would need permission to post the links and this would require reg-ing to all the ones i found-and still quite a few , though the OFFICAL ones are down (R.I.Pieces - they were useless anyway and Admin was -lets say (be nice)- ...VERY RUDE and as mentioned in earlier post I have a few choice words for the OFFICAL EDONK BOARD- ADMIN-( his nick with withheld-he knows who I am talking about !!)-but not HERE-out of respect to a GREAT ADMIN and BOARD HERE at 'AFTERDAWN!!)- and probably also would need permission from admin HERE to post the linxs -for safety reasons..so this said....)-again LOOK around and you will find versions of EDK2 to download-some 'I am guessing' ;) - private- via again guessing say via Rapidshare-(file Host site)- or something like that : ))) -obvoiusly don't re-dwnld the same one- or 'latest pro'-or it will just give you the same messages and try to uninstall again-I tried it already with a backup copy of the latest pro vs- so..BTW- a hint GET THE 'LITE VS.of ED2K'-worked for me 'as pro'-without the messages and uninstall stuff-and STAYS RUNNING!!!(now i was a reg-ed pro from before all this- so don't know about the 'adware' and stuff-(not harmful-but a pain in the you know where) in the 'lite vs.'-on those previously not reged to it- as it auto- goes pro and detects your old reg info if you had edonk2000 previous on that computer)-working fine for me-(with no messages about illegal dwnlding music or the BOGUS logging ip stuff)-or trying to uninstall- and still THE BEST SPEEDS ON UP/DWN lds and still BEST 'file search'-hope it last but just in case still set up and tweaking 'ML DONKEY'-(they have a just released a new Beta-which should be 'compiled' for Windows -(present beta is linux)-I understand soon- if not already, at this post-and the front-end G.U.I.(Graphic User Interface) for windows called-"SANCHO" as MLDONKEY runs 'bare bones' in the system tray-so recommend for those who are 'Newbies' to MLDONKEY definetly if to P2P..and there is a previous windows vs. of 'ML Donkey'- at the offical site...that runs with Sancho\ What I do is use 'Sancho' (which is 3rd party software)- for the start and my searches and etc.. because of the GUI and then can close it and just run MLDONK as both are independent of each other- and MLDONK is standalone-if you want to maximise your MLDONK speed wthout 'Sancho'in memory or MLD interfacing thru it ....LOL on your search my fellow edonk user's-hinted best i can here ..but if you need any help..see what can do from what i know to date.and lets HOPE it last : )))
