Hi These are my specs

AMD 64 3500+ cpu
1.0gb pc3200 ram
200gb 7200rpm hd

My current video card is a ati xpress 200 (integrated 256mb) and when I try to load quake the frame rate is unbearable not to mention the weired colours and blockyness displaying. I was wondering I live in Canada and I can pick up a ATI x800xl 256mb pci-e card for $130 bucks while a geforce 7600Gt fetches for over $200.00. If I buy a x800xl card do you beelieve this pc can play these games at very good quality? or is my pc needed for a ram upgrade.
\thanks

Sounds like a graphics card issue to me. Any idea on what kind of graphics hardware you have, or is it the dreaded integrated graphics? :)

Go with the 7600 gt, it's way better than the 800 xl and it should play quite decently on new games. its a good investment.

I think that the problem is the graphics card. 1 GB RAM is most defenetely enought and a equivalent of 3.5 Ghz is also more than enough keeping in mind the recommended requirements for Half-Life 2 is 2.4 Ghz.

If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

The problem isn't the graphics card. Why? Because they don't have one. As stated in the OP's post, they have integrated graphics. Which, are just good enough to run a 3d screen saver. As stated by the others, the 7600gt is way better than the x800xl. Even with the card, you aren't going to be getting 60fps on ultra high settings. Maybe 30fps on High.

I was looking to play on high quality. I play on 800x600 resolution or I will play on a maximum on 1024x768. I thought the x800xl was a good card, is the 7600gt worth the extra cash?

Are you in canada? I ask because 7600GTs don't go for us$200, instead, they're all ~us$175.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics.h...2=567&chart=213

The first of the two links shows the GT vs. XL in HL2:Episode 1. It and standard HL2 are optimized for ATi cards, as you can see, the 7600GT beats it by 9fps in 1024x768@ 4xFSAA and 8x AF.

The second, is for Prey. Prey uses an updated/optimized version of the Doom3 engine. The Doom3 engine is the same that Quake 4 uses, and is optimized for nvidia cards. Again, the GT beats the XL, by 5fps this time.

So, as the numbers show, the GT out-performs the XL card in both fields.

So, have a look and pick up an ATi killer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...on=&srchInDesc=

@DaveERG

Do not, I repeat do not. Get your prices from retailers like CompUSA,Frys,BestBuy,etc. Go to newegg.com and I guarentee that their prices will beat any commercial retailers. For example a eVGA 7600GT videocard cost $167. And when shopping the brands eVGA offers a full lifetime warranty. Heres a link to their warranty description for more details - http://www.evga.com/support/lifetime/

PeaInAPod speaks the truth. eVGA also has the "Step-up program" ( http://www.evga.com/stepup/default.asp?switch=2 ).

Participants will be allowed, for one time only, to trade in their existing EVGA video card and upgrade to the newest and greatest currently available. Not all customers will be eligible for this program, please read the following terms and conditions.

IM sorry i messed up I didnt go to futureshoop I went to a computer store that beats like BB prices by like 20%. I also messed up the 7600 GT is at least $100 canadain more than the x800xl. I cant see spending $100.00 to get an extra 5fps. Forgot to mention IIf i do order from newegg if I can since im in Canada. I will get like a $50.00 customs fee so it wouldnt be worth it.

In your opinions though is th x800xl a good al laround card?

It's odd that the GT costs so much more there. Newegg sells only two XL (pciex16), at us$291 and us$161.

There is an x850xt that beats the GT pretty well and it costs us$100 AR (after us$20 rebate). Though, I just comnfirmed that they don't ship internationaly. So, use newegg.com as a good resource for pricing and reviews for your search. Personally, I'd opt for the XT card that beats the GT and costs us$75 less.
