Hi,

Your computer running slow can be due to many things, so some trouble shooting is required, but don't worry, thats what we are here for :-)

*Overheating

A major cause of slowness is overheating. Open the case and make sure there are no accumulated dustballs or other obstructions to fan operation or air circulation. You can monitor your temperatures with:

Motherboard Monitor

*Not enough RAM

If you have less than 512 MB, consider adding more memory.

How to add more RAM

http://www.microsoft.com/canada/home/int...urcomputer.aspx

*Excessive fragmentation

Defragment your hard disk every so often. The defrag that comes with Win XP is fine, or you may prefer O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware which has more interesting graphics. For defragmenting your pagefile and registry hives, I recommend (free) PageDefrag.

PageDefrag:

O&O Defrag 2000

*Some legitimate programs are known to use a lot of resources and slow you down

If you think that is your problem, please post a HijackThis log and we will help you keep them from starting automatically.

Malware

It's possible that you may be infected by a Virus/Spyware/Other and is hogging resouces, this causes a lot of "slowness" in the majority.

What I like to do is trouble shoot like this:

Cheapest to replace --------> most expensive to replace.

So, that mean's in this case I'd like to see a HjT log :-)

Please post a HjT (HijackThis) log, to do so, follow theese simple instructions:

Download HJT from HERE

Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name. See here for specific instructions and screen shots to help:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed.

Run the HijackThis.exe file and choose to run a "Full System Scan And Save Logfile"in a matter of seconds you should see a notepad document pop up (the logfile), copy and paste thar log file into a reply here.

Yours Truly; Rav

you could remove the program that you downloaded and see if that fixes your problem! if you have win xp you can do a system restore to the day before your system started to slow down and that should solve your problem, like the other posters have said do a spyware scan, that could much of your problem
