I am possibly in the market for an external hard drive but I want to know if anyone has dared open up a Western Digital My Book before. What I want to know is: Are the hard drives the same? Would it be possible to switch an existing hard drive with the one that comes stock in the external hard drive? My primary reason for this question is I would like to purchase the 250 gig external... and place one of my 160's in it instead... and use the 250 for my primary... I know that may be obsurd for some of you... but I'm just wanting to know if it can be done. Or if they are completely different all together. Thank you, any feedback is appreciated.

Not a bad idea.... I'm really not sure what I'm gonna do yet... I was just asking for my own curiosity more so than anything.. I have never owned an external hard drive so as far as the internals of one.. I am completely naive I have always assumed that they had standard hard drives inside, but when I was looking at one at the store tonight I noticed that the usb plug and power plug was on the side instead of the end.... So I started to wonder if maybe they were a little different than internal hard drives.. I guess I will just have to wait till I get one to figure it out. Anyways... it's not really a pressing issue... just simple curiosity is all... but I do agree with your suggestion... that does sound better.

I've upgraded the HDDs in both my Buslink and IOMega externals. If you are willing to swap out a drive, then do it. Just make sure it's after the warantee is up. (opening voids them)

When evolution selects its agents, it does so at a cost, makes demands in exchange for singularity, and you may be asked to do something against your very nature. This force, evolution, is not sentimental. Like the Earth itself, it knows only the hard facts of life's struggle with death. All you can do is hope and trust that when you have served its needs faithfully, there may still remain some glimmer of the life you once knew.
