I am on a network at a college and dont have access to anything but my computer. Every time I try to use Azureus i get yellow smileys and less than 1 kb/s download. I had the same problem with a P2P program until i disabled the UPnp and now i get a decent connection with around 120 kb/s maximum. Help?

Well, unfortunatly I don't have an anwser to your question, but I would highly reccomend to stop downloading of your College unless your have some serious programming skills to outvade there servers!!! They usually have tabs on everything you do on a PC, especailly the Internet, and if they traceroute the connections using there bandwith and trace it to a P2P/Bittorrent Client, chances are you'll get sued, so I'd suggest you do it at Home or far away on a motorway travel lodge, if at all!!!

Are you saying that if i take up too much bandwith they check why and notice i am using a P2P, theyll sue?

No, not at all, I'm merely stating the fact that if you use alot of bandwidth ect... It will raise high level of suspision, enough suspision for them to want to check out whats using it, they'll trace it back to the source (you) and will want to examine your P.C without any prior warning, then if they gain access to your P.C, they'll see the P2P programm and clients and stuff, see your illegal downloads, and they'll either report you, very serverly warn you and possibly suspend you, or if they get told off byt the RIAA or anyone like that, then they'll sue you!!! I was just saying your digging a deeper hole by dowloading from your college or wherever your at, trust me I've seen how there server's work, what programs they use ect... they see every move you make and every key you type, and if they need to use it. They Will!!!

What programs could i use to hide the fact i am using a P2P program. And if i use small amounts of bandwith they wont notice?

you won't be able to hide p2p activities from the system you're using them on (i.e., your college's network). all you can do is try to be careful and keep it to a minimum. doing that doesn't mean they won't notice, it just means they probably won't bother with you.

But i download a lot of stuff from the internet. Can they tell the difference between legal and "illegal."

not necessarily, but the can tell where you're downloading from. playing the odds, if you're getting stuff from bittorrent and p2p networks, you're getting illegal stuff. and thus, they'll work against you.

example: at my school, if they check the network logs and find you've been on *anything* p2p related, they'll shut off your net connection. and IRC is already blocked, anyway.

Hi,

I think its got to do with traffic shaping and protocol sniffers.

For example, say if you fire up Azureus & start a torrent, the protocol sniffer detects that its BT traffic and throttles it, hence the unbearable speeds.

What we can do however, is use protocol encryption and message stream encryption to disguise the fact that you are d/l'ing & u/l'ing w/ Bit Torrent.

I, a few week's ago, put together a decent guide covering different aspects of protocol obfuscation methods and how to's, you can find that guide in my sig, click the third link.

All feed back is appreciated as long as it's kept inside that thread.

Cheers and good luck.

Rav, it's a school network, not an ISP.
No matter if he turns on encryption, they'll still see what/who he's uploading and downloading to.
So your guide would be useless in this case.

Eh, it can be done w/ ssh tunnelling, but I'm not going to tell anyone how to do it. That's what google is for.

Tommelee, i take it i don't have to tell you that they would still cap his connection due to the use "unusual" ammounts of bandwidth ?

Doing one or two downloads at a time doesnt take up much bandwith. They wont notice that.

Actually i have a cousin who went to college and he was all ways downloading using p2p software they were able to track him down as he was absorbing a bunch of bandwith and he got sued and kicked out because he has pornography and pirated software so i strongly recoment you to not eaven download anything suspecious.
wish you luck...............ERICKO123

Lol, Fiend, I doubt there's much you could tell me that I didn't already know, hehe.

And, let's see---they've got an OC12 or an OC3, or perhaps even I2--which is where the badass filesharing goes on because it doesn't follow the rules of TCP--there are whole I2 filesharing networks.

But anyway, they've got literally hundreds of terabytes flowing into every dorm, every day. The only way they're going to catch on is if they get a letter from a copyright holder. And, using SSH, the entire transaction is encrypted, and also unlikely to be that fast because it's almost a proxy, so I wouldn't personally worry about it.

But, as one last hint to ya there feller--your university most likely has an underground filesharing service, I suggest you look into it--you'll get Gigabit speeds with 0% chance of being found by the copyright holders, because it's a subnet--NOT connected to the outside world.

Could you tell me how to find out about the network sharing? I know that other people here do file sharing because i have had obscenly fast download speeds but i cant find them. And to the people who keep talking about them capping my connection, THEY PRETTY MUCH HAVE. We have one line that is shared between one thousand students. And im pretty sure its not a high speed line because most of the time i get really bad download speeds.

check this SSH tunneling for bittorrent out: http://www.whalesalad.com/2006/08/27/tun...rrent-over-ssh/
(also check the comments on the page for useful info)

my college has a firewall too and they dont care whos doin what so is there a way to get past the "fortinet firewall". currently i use www.kproxy.com but its so damn slow that it jus sucks to surf the net. so is there a way to browse the net without using kproxy? i suppose ill have to use proxy servers but i don really know anythin bout it so a lil help will be appreciated.

Note: Dloads from sites accessed thru kproxy are usually corrupt. so will rpoxy servers cause the same prob? im not lookin for anonymity here, jus to beat the damn firewall! Thaanks in advance guys

I can get incredible DL speeds if I use the ports in the 60,000 zone, but I think they cought me because after a few min of DLing, everything got screwy; websites wouldn't work, DL stopped, and so on, but i never got in any trouble. I dont see how they could actually prove that you were DLing illegal stuff. I am not allowed to let my computer be a public server (so I have to bring my Uploads to 0, sorry) and I cannot download illegal files (so I lie about it) according to my school's policy. I'm still gonna do some research before I DL again to be on the safe side.
