I recently inherited an IBM Netvista Pentium IV desktop. When switched on, the normal message "starting system" appears, but then it immediately reboots. This happens every time. It is not possible to get into the BIOS setup. What could the problem be? The system appears to be in very good condition. All suggestions welcome.

Check for loose or not properly seated memory. Also make sure that all other connections/cards are properly connected.

Forgot to ask - is the general consensus that this is a hardware problem?

Be *VERY CAREFUL* when cleaning the memory contacts, but to ensure you have no static electricity on you and that you don't bend or flex the chip too much.

Also check to be sure that the CPU fan is seated well and is working. And unprotected CPU will cause problems similar to what you describe. If the memory doesn't turn out to be the problem, look into getting some Antec silver thermal paste and putting it between the CPU and heatsink.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
