also another general question. A computer wizz i know at school told me that having upload speeds above 60 kb/s is "crazy" and only invites detection from the ISPs. Is there any truth to this or should i use the download speed * .8 to get upload speed, in my case 160 kb/s?

Protocol encryption (PE) & Message stream encryption (MSE)

PE and MSE are protocol obfuscation methods, they use a D-H key exchange combined with the info hash of the torrent to establish the key, then it uses RC4 to encrypt the data.

The D-H key exchange helps to minimize the risk of passive listeners, and the info hash helps avoid man-in-the-middle attacks. RC4 is chosen for its speed. The first kilobyte of the RC4 output is discarded to prevent a particular attack.

The specification allows the users to choose between encrypting the headers only or the full connection. Encrypting the full connection provides more obfuscation but uses more CPU time.

However, only Azureus and ”Torrent beta 1.4.1 build 413 or older lets the user choose. All other clients default to full encryption.
To ensure compatibility with other clients that don't support this specification, users may also choose whether unencrypted incoming or outgoing connections are still allowed.

All supported clients will enable encryption automatically if they receive an encrypted incoming connection even if outgoing encryption is disabled.

Some ISP?s have begun monitoring transmission headers
looking for torrent traffic, then auto-throttling them.
Please note that if you?re
downloading from a tracker or individual w/ encryption
turned ON and yours is turned OFF, you won?t download a
single byte. I recommend leaving it on all the time.

Private Trackers
Private trackers are the way of the future. They
generally require you to maintain a good ratio (uploaded to
downloaded, over 1.0 is good.) and because of this, they
tend to be must faster than public trackers. There are
probably hundreds of them, but I?m not going to list any of
them here. Several of the best ones tend to stay closed
because the trackers limit memberships to what their
machines can handle. Spend some time on google or your
favorite web board (NOT HERE) (Forum rules) to find some
private trackers, and then register when you can.

Hi Mediabob,

Read here:

?:::::::::::::::::Rav009?s Bit Torrent Privacy And Safety Guide:::::::::::::::::?

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/395674

Enable full encryption in your client, this is when Bit Torrent data that is not fully encrypted cannot leave or enter your machine, it slows down speeds just a miniscule bit and consules just a miniscule bit more resources, but is a LOT more effective, I reccomend you enable it.

Theres no "Safest Client" btw... :-)

Lol tell the computer wizz at school that I said he needs to study more and make crap up less. Or better yet, ask him where he got his BS degree from.

But yea, read his guide. A client will let you connect to whatever baddies you let it connect to--but those in the know only choose the original client, Azureus, or utorrent. :)
