Hey guys,

just got a new digital camera. I do plan to shoot lots of movies, got a 1 GB SD card.. However the problem is that even though it records in AVI format, files are HUGE!

In geenral, arent avis used to compress the mpg/mpeg files? Shooting a movie with my camera for 1 minute with 640 x XXX, 30 fps = 100 MB+ file!

This is very inefficient. Could you tell me or point to a guide how can I recompress the AVI to something with descent size without loosing too much of quzlity (XviD or DivX codec , dont know which is better).

Thanks in advance!

Wow that is a big file, sounds like it's using a very high bitrate. Using almost any mpeg4 (h.263/h.264) will offer the best compression, as it has newer and more refined compression technologies than mpeg2. DivX is one of the more popular codecs. You could use a bitrate of around 1500kb/s for the video and 160kb/s (mp3) for the audio and end up with under 1gb per hour of footage. With these settings I am sure you will hardly see any quality loss.

There are many guides on this site, and it may be help to visit www.divx.com for extra guidance.
