I have a Sony DRU-701A Dual Layer 16x burner. Had it for about 3 yrs. with minimal problems, until now. It always burn top quality DVD's and games on any disc I've thrown into it. Sony, Memorex, Maxell, Verbatim, ect. The last couple of times I've tried to burn it's prompts me: Disc not writeable with the following types: Verbatim 16x DVD+R and Maxell 16x DVD-R.
It began with the Verbatims so I inserted a Maxell 16x DVD+R and it burned great. I got a pack of Maxell 16x DVD-R and now I'm getting the same error: Disc not writeable. This is very annoying as it takes about 3 hours to encode each movie only to let me down and have to restart.
Could anyone suggest what is the problem or how to fix it?
Oh, I looked for drivers but, there isn't much out there for this Sony burner. Any help is very appreciated as I'm very backed up on movies to burn. :)
Try running a lens cleaner thru it or spray some compressed air in the drive (nothing heavy duty). In 3 yrs dust can get in there and on the lens - might cause a problem.
This drive is an oem LiteOn SOHW 1633S - riskier but another option you could try - crossflashing the firmware to this model - BSOY - patched (from 6/06)

binkie7, I'd thank you for that! Guess I didn't look hard enough. :) The date on the currently installed drivers was '01. After, installing '05 drivers I sucessfully burned with a Maxell 16x DVD-R. I haven't tried the Verbatims yet, but I'm sure they'll work. Very much appreciated!
